For those of you that have not already heard, Mike and Joy Hughes were killed in a small plane accident in Arizona on Friday, October 4th. We are all saddened and shocked over their sudden death and grieve along with Mike and Joy’s family over their loss. When we hear anything further on memorial services, we will let everyone know.
Mike was a RangeMaster at Gunsite, and taught there since 1991. A former Lieutenant in the Denver Police Department, he was also a retired Major from the US Army Reserves. Mike and Joy owned the Raven Company in Aurora. Mike and Joy lived in Aurora and also owned a home in Paulden, AZ.
The memorial service will be Friday, October 18 at 11 am at the Smokey Hill Vineyard Church, 20050 E. Smokey Hill Rd, Centennial CO.
Sad to see a member of our community pass :(
So sorry to hear this. I have known and shot with Mike since the mid 90s. His wife Joy was always happy and fun to be around.
Very sad to lose one of our own.

[Thread title updated]
By now you've read of the death of Mike Hughes, his wife Joy, and two others.
Not only was Mike an Adjunct Rangemaster at Gunsite Training Center and owner of Raven Companies here in Aurora, but Mike was also retired from the Army Reserves and a retired Lieutenant with the Denver Police Department. More than these amazing contributions, Mike was a member of the Colorado AR-15 Shooters forum family as member mikeh1911 (https://www.ar-15.co/members/1831-mikeh1911).
Mikes legacy and memory will continue on in everyone who had the benefit of meeting, shooting with, or receiving training from him. His status on this site has been updated to reflect that he will live on in perpetuity with us.
We at COAR are deeply saddened by the lost of a member of our family. Please join us in pausing for a moment to remember Mike Hughes and his wife Joy. We also ask that you please keep their family in your thoughts and prayers.
Your watch has ended Mike. Until we meet at the great range in the sky brother, Rest In Peace!

My dad and I have taken several classes from Mike over the years. Most recently I took his precision rifle class in August. It was such a great day. By the end of it, I went 5 for 5 on a 1' x 2' target at 500 yards. He and Joy were wonderful people. I really liked them and they will be missed.
I had the opportunity to meet Mike this past summer. He was a super nice guy. I was watching the news Friday night and heard his name associated with the plane wreck in AZ and was like "WTF!!!". I didn't know him well but it was nice to have a chance to meet him. RIP.
Heard on the news. Very sad. RIP.
