In my opinion having pink penalty flags in the NFL is stupid. How about instead of spending all that money on pink shoes, towels, skull caps they donate it to breast cancer research. They could sew on pink ribbons on the front of the jerseys to show support.

Would anyone be upset really be upset if they only had a ribbon? If the commentators and players can't even tell when there is a penalty because every players towel is also pink it's to much.

I've got to agree. They should put the money towards research instead of accessories. I know it's for awareness but I think at this point we've got that covered.

And here come the football haters. Don't bring up the NFL, college ball or fantasy football unless you're queer.

If you are not aware of this by now, there is liitle that can be done to make you aware.. Breast cancer isn't even the number killer of women.

If I remember right, part of the reason they use pink equipment is because they turn around and auction it off at a later date. Game used stuff can fetch a pretty price. All the proceeds go to research.

when i played college ball, our coaches were approached by this pink beast...i said i ain't gay, and i ain't wearing it...had the best game of my life playing against a bunch of pink sissies. As for the nfl, had a bunch of my buddies play, and the BS that they had to go through....kinda made me glad i was under tall, and slow!

Wearing pink has nothing to do with GAY or sissy. Pink is recognized worldwide showing support for breast cancer. Then again i guess some of us are more comfortable with our sexuality, than others.

The finances on this aren't great.
http://www.businessinsider.com/why-is-the-nfl-profitting-off-of-breast-cancer-2012-10

When we contacted the NFL's online shop for clarification, we were told 5% of the sales are being donated to the American Cancer Society. If the pink products have a typical 100% mark-up at retail, that means the NFL is keeping 90% of the profit from the sale of Breast Cancer Awareness gear. And then consider that only 70.8% of money the ACS receives goes towards research and cancer programs (http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=6495).

So, for every $100 in sales of pink gear, only $3.54 is going towards research while the NFL is keeping approximately $45 (based on 100% mark-up) [Note: see update below].

Of course, awareness is a very important factor in the fight against breast cancer. But I am sure if you asked most people with cancer or those that have lost loved ones to the dreaded disease, they'd prefer a cure over more awareness. In the meantime, the wallets of the NFL, which had $9.5 billion in revenue in 2011 (http://www.businessinsider.com/sports-chart-of-the-day-nfl-revenue-still-dwarfs-other-major-sports-2012-10), just keep getting fatter.

[UPDATE] The NFL wanted to clarify their position. While they did not dispute the numbers above, a representative said the NFL does not profit from the sale of pink merchandise. Any money that is not donated to ACS is used to cover the costs of their breast cancer awareness program, A Crucial Catch. Also, the NFL says they have donated "more than $3 million" or approximately $1 million per year as a result of the program that began in 2009.

Having said all that....
I am a cancer survivor myself (not breast) and really like this, despite the above.
I own several NFL "pink" hats for my team from home, and one of the official "pink" Wilson Duke footballs.

Edit: I also do agree with Blacklabel and Eric P - we really should have "awareness" covered by now. I also work in healthcare and can assure you that while I can't speak to awareness, I can say we're not entirely at goals for mammograms, so getting the pink out there is still fine with me.

What color for prostate cancer awareness?

BTW, anyone realize the difference in research dollars for breast cancer vs prostate cancer? The number of deaths due to each is similar but breast cancer gets twice the research dollars.

The whole thing is about marketability and who can win those wars between these charities. Pink dominates.
I'm personally fine with all of them - what we learn about one type of cancer is often helpful in general, if not specifically.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested, this is the best read I've ever found on cancer and the history of it.
Be warned - it is long. REALLY good, but long.

I wear pink and I don't think twice about it. Having gone though breast cancer with several of those closest to me (still taking my mother to all of her treatments, appointments & whatever since 2008) I enjoy wearing it to help increase awareness and get others thinking about it. While it annoys me that all the players have pink towels that match the flags so all month it's difficult to tell if I see a flag or not I fully support the cause. They auction these game-worn items and raise a significant chunk of money for breast cancer research & there are plenty of stories of ladies catching it early due directly to the NFL doing this in the month of October the last few years.

So if anyone has a problem with men wearing pink hit me up via PM and I'll get you my address so we can discuss your opinion in person. [Flower]

I have no problem with people that want to publicly fund millionaire projects and then be charged to use them.

just don't involve me in it :)
