.22-250 vs Pdog

Took my new Savage 11 in .22-250 for a jaunt yesterday. Went with a Nikon Monarch 3 5-20x44mm with BDC. Winds were kicking up, but managed to zero it at 200 yards as recommended, with a bullseye as the final shot.
People kept telling me how "fun" the caliber is for pdogs, but I had no idea! Took (2) at about 150 yards and watched them literally drop dead as their insides became their outsides!
The third was just under 100 yards and I watched as the majority of his body went flying in the air to the right with others parts flying off to the left! He landed a good 7-8' from where I shot him, and the only thing holding his upper body to his lower body was his pelt! Following the trail of blood and guts, we finally found his arm still attached to his shoulder over 10' from where he landed.
Expectations exceeded to say the least!

Hydrostatic shock due to temporary cavitation. There is a wave of energy behind a traveling bullet like a boat wake on a lake. This is called temporary cavitation and when it exceeds the dimensions of a soft bodied target, the target explodes due to no more room for expansion. The same thing happens when you shoot a gallon jug of water. The larger the temporary cavitation, and the smaller the soft body target, the less there is left over.

Temporary cavitation can be increased by increasing the frontal area of a bullet by using a larger caliber or shooting a flat nose/wad cutter; or by increasing velocity.

There are plenty of videos on youtube showing this effect in ballistic gelatin.


FWIW, many years ago used a 270 with a flat tip bullet. Shot a prairie dog from rear to front at 50 yards. All that was left was one arm attached to a head.

Yeah, the added velocity is wicked. We have an AR500 Pdog popper set out at exactly 200 yards that the .223 would THUD but hardly move. The same projectile in the .22-250 flips it back like the .308 does!

Get a 2nd one, when the first one heats up, switch to the second. It will prolong your barrel life. I run 2 of em, but they only come out when i get to the 300yd mark to make it fair. The great thing about you picking a savage is that you can get replacement barrels at a whim. If you burn up your barrel, it's a snap to replace. Second, Get a heavier stock. You can get a decent varminter for under 200. The heavier the gun, the better it does when the wind picks up (holds on target). Both of my 250's run 8-32nikons, and the magnification pays off at 400yds. If you reload, my guns run 52gr amax's over 36gr of varget with 210M primers. One hole load out of both guns at 100yds. Quarters at 300yds (when no wind).

Nice. My 700 .223 still gets to do the majority of the work out to 350 or so, then like you, the 22-250 will come out to play for the farther targets. I shoot off a tripod, so the heavier stocks don't work as well for me. In fact I just switched back to the original stock from an Ultimate Tactical on my 700 for that very same reason. It's funny. Even on my 395 yard headshot with the 700, I still only kept the power at 8x on my Redfield Revenge. Don't know why, just do. I do reload, so I'll have to give the 52 gr AMAXs a try.

Got a nice 200+ yard headshot today with the .22-250 despite being all gimpy with a torn ligament on my left thumb!
