I have a Kimber Pro Covert 1911. I have seen some gun smith's use a tool to take the tension off of the guide rod spring so they can clean it better after they have removed the whole assembly after taking apart the upper from the lower. I have not seen the tool or do not know what it is called when I tried looking for it at Midway etc.

Anyone know what that bad boy is called?

A paper clip is an acceptable substitute. Just make sure the short leg is short enough to pass through the slide.
Its a mite cheaper too.

I think that the OP wants to take the recoil spring off the guide rod to clean it.
Pull back on the end cap, remove the tool or paper clip and slowly release tension on the spring. *WARNING* Do Not point toward your face and wear eye protection while attempting to remove the recoil spring. You'll poke your eye out if the end cap and spring suddenly flys off.

I just used a spare tiny allen wrench that I had laying around. Had to snip it down to size with a pair of dykes.

Did this once to replace the captured recoil spring on an Ultra.
Won't do it again - royal PITA getting it back together.

No that tool I have lots of those. What davsel said...have seen some people using some type of tool to hold the tension with the recoil spring and gude rod when taking apart and putting back together. Not sure if they just used something they made themselves. Was asking those who do this a lot if there is a specific tool for the job or they just use their fingers.

Yep that's something I was asking about. Tried searching on Midway's site and never did find it. Thanks.
