Sorry, while I think most animal "rights" activists are overboard idiots, I'm on the side of the Indians on this one. I don't see the need to harvest something that rare nor do I see the particular skills necessary to find a big-arse splotch of white like that in green forest.

Sorry, while I think most animal "rights" activists are overboard idiots, I'm on the side of the Indians on this one. I don't see the need to harvest something that rare nor do I see the particular skills necessary to find a big-arse splotch of white like that in green forest.

Me four. Just because you can doesn't mean that you should. Good on the hunters for trying to make right in this situation.
Nope, I don't think I would have either, not that I'm a moose hunter anyway. But I'd likely consider that it might have special meaning to the native peoples, like the white buffalo do, and I'd rather take photos of it and leave it be. Lots of other moose in the woods. I'd get more enjoyment out of showing the photos to folks than a white hide.

I can pass on a bad shot or a shot of which I'm uncertain.... but if I buy a tag and get a chance, Imma kill it. Think of how clear the crosshairs would be on an albino. I guess I'm a jerk.

Don't make you a jerk, just a hunter. I can only speculate on "what I'd do", I've never had my sights on an animal. I like to think I'd be selective, but I might shoot the first thing I see. I seriously doubt it, but I haven't been there yet. Hope to someday.
Guy probably has a haunted rifle now...

While I can appreciate their tribal sensitivity it wouldn't keep me from harvesting a rare and exceptional game animal. I would grant the animal due respect in the scheme of life by eating the meat and having the hide prepared as a full life size mount. That way it would live on far beyond it's natural life. Might even donate it to a museum after a time.
I've encountered a number of albino, leucistic and schizochroic animals, and have caught a few. Awesomely beautiful but they are genetic aberrations, unlikely to survive into adulthood.
Here are a couple of mulie bucks near Meeker, CO. Which one would you put your sights on? I've already decided.

In some states, it is illegal to shoot albino deer and other big game. Even if it is legal, you must ask yourself a moral question of whether it is right or wrong. That is something you and only you can decide, and a huge part of our country seems to have a problem with these days. Myself, I would have passed on it. I would consider it a blessing to have laid eyes on it, and let it go. That is a true challenge, and harder than merely putting sights on a big white animal. Truth is however, a lot of albino animals do not fair well in the wild.

Now a white yote, I'd shoot it. No different to me than a white prairie dog. A white wolf - I'd probably hesitate.

Wisconsin it is illegal to shoot an albino deer that is 100% white. Now if it has a brown patch of hair on it somewhere, then it is fair game. In Iowa, if it mostly white, then it is off limits too. There are other states as well, but I am familiar with those two.
I would have shot it. not a doubt in my mind.

Well, a google search revealed a couple of states with regulations prohibiting taking albino deer.

Would I shoot...maybe. I have taken albino animals and passed on albino animals. I am a meat hunter. It depended on the abundance of other game animals and if the animal was the best choice. I wouldn't have donated the hide and not taken any pictures.... no pics... no problem.
White fur (albino-lack of pigmintation) genes are in most mammals. They don't occur very often because we are not in an ice age and it is counter productive to survival.
The reason for the genes is because the climate changes. When the climate swings colder and the next ice age arrives, the white fur genes will rule and the others will die out.
BTW this has nothing to do with the current religion of Global Warming or Climate Change. Climate swings are normal and have occurred since the beginning of recorded time.

I for one am part Indian. Not sure what tribe, was adopted. But growing up knowing that and being a hunter. I have drank the blood of my 1st kill and from a few others. Indian way is you drink the spirit of the animal you consume.
I'm still alive and kicking. And had a Sh*t load of tasty dinners to boot. And trophy's on the wall. [Coffee]
If shooting this animal offended their religious beliefs, then the Hindus must really be pissed at us for eating all that tasty beef.
I'm not a hunter though I come from a long line of hunters in Minnesota and Wisconsin, I also believe that hunting is a right that we should all be able to enjoy. That said, even I know what importance animals like this have on certain cultures. I would have passed it up. The hunters claiming they had no idea reminds me of the guys in Minnesota every year that would eventually shoot a cow thinking it was a deer.

That's them Norwegian deer. Reminds me of the hmong that shot a llama in Wisconsin, thought it was a big deer, he had coke bottle glasses on.

Yes, the SKS was their choice of deer rifles..
I used to hunt birds, grouse, pheasants and so on, decided picking bird shot out of my meal wasn't for me and then school, work and other things got in the way of affording a deer rifle and so on so I never moved on to anything more.

To echo what some have stated: I would not have harvested that bull.
IMO, there are certain creatures that are "magestic" for lack of a better word, and mean more than a slab of meat in my freezer and/or a fur/rack on the wall; but thats my .02$.
An animal mounted and preserved and displayed somewhere where all can see and enjoy is better than an animal in the wild that dies and is never seen or eaten by a bear.
Something like that I would imagine would be seen in a museum or cabelas or bass pro where many people can enjoy seeing it. Most people have no clue such an animal exists.

Been following this thread and pondering it. Can't say what I would do. Am a meat hunter, would depend on how hungry and how plentiful meat was.
Since when were "white creatures" spirit animals? Somebody better let the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton know.

I have seen my fair share of moose being kill by Texans thinking they were deer or elk. They were so proud of the "deer" or "elk" they slung them half way over the bed of their trucks for johnney law to see, never ended well for them. Any ways back on topic. If i knew what it meant something to the people, and i did not before reading this, i would have not taken the shot. The legal little meat givers, the ones hippies would be upset about, are the ones i am really after.

I would like to think that I would have only shot it with a camera. I know that many native tribes hold the 'white' in honor.

I was waiting to someone to go there....
i love photography, and have not yet been on a real hunt. I think I would take the shot either way.
Also, I bet someone out there is willing to pay top dollar for that hide. $$$$$
