There were no injuries or arrests after the feeding frenzy caused by a power outage during a routine maintenance test by Xerox of their government-funded debit cards.

Ummm, sure, yeah, that's the story and they're sticking to it! And these people will run the healthcare exchange?

If they could track down every single one of those ebt users who took advantage of that error and deport them to, I don't know, some abandoned village in rural Siberia, the US would be immeasurably better off.

How about people plan ahead and get some damned food the day before the shutdown? How about they go visit a soup kitchen if they're really that destitute? How about they get a damned job instead of leeching off everyone else?

Exactly! People are people. There is no "us" and "them". These supposed "elitists" are nothing more than thugs, criminals, shoplifters and looters who wear suits and enjoy special privileges. The sooner folks realize this, the better...

If they are smart about it all purchases will be deducted from future benefits until the bill is paid. As was said all the transactions were recorded so it is not like the gal that had $700 in her cart and only .29 cents on the card could claim she did not know.

I can hear the howls next month already. After seeing an article about how the poor woman was going to live on a reduction from $800 to like $625 in food stamps I about fell out of my chair. I know the wife and I spend about $150-$175 a month and eat just fine. I know I can feed a family of 5 for no more than $500

Just for fun since I am feeding 4 adults and 2 kids tonight I added it up. Dinner for 6 came out to $6.59 and I splurged. I also buy on sale and stock up when I can.

Let me answer this question with another question.

Let's say the bank made an error and credited your account with $1,000,000. What would happen to you if you withdrew that $1,000,000 and spent it? You would go to prison for theft. So, how is this EBT thing any different?

these poor people are downtrodden on their luck. We should reward them for their ingenuity. They all got on their obamaphones, hopped on the bus or walked from their government assistance housing and stockpiled on everything they could fit in their carts!

Definitions can vary.

I expect a certain level of behavior from people, these people do not meet that expectation. Yes, I am disappointed every day by the actions of people, I really should lower my expectations substantially.

OTOH, These people are the same ones that will kick in your door, murder you and your family, just to get something you have and they want. They are the enemy and I think trouble is coming our way so I am getting mentally ready for the fight and describing them as less than human helps to prepare me for that fight.

Last I heard Walmart is out the money for this clusterf&*% and Xerox is saying it is Walmarts fault for not following emergency procedures i.e. $50 maximum purchases. But I believe some of you are right, that this is going to be in the future with riots. At some point the .gov is going to default, and if you don't have your own private army to protect you, you might possibly die.

I suspect the manager made the call to protect the lives of his employees and the property of Walmart as I don't doubt that crowd of losers would probably have turned violent when they were cut off at $50 each. It will likely cost him his job, but its probably the call I would have made too.

roberth, I certainly understand, but not everyone is that way and I think it is dangerous to paint with such a broad stroke

No, everyone isn't that way. I'm just talking about those who took advantage of this situation. If they'll do that when presented with the opportunity, what will they do when they're presented with a different kind of opportunity. For example, while I'd like to think they'd pass on home invasion, I can't assume that they would pass on a home invasion. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

This is all very difficult for for me, I like trusting people, I like thinking that I can help someone with a flat tire and they won't try to bash my head in and steal my car. Many people deserve help because they are in a situation not of their own making or choosing, these people deserve our empathy and assistance. The difficult part is sorting out who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. I suppose we'll know who the bad guys are when we hear our neighbors house getting busted up and see the perps coming to our door.

If it was easy, everyone could do it. [Flower]

The problem I have is sometimes the good people do bad stuff and the bad people do good stuff. I wish they would just make up their minds and be consistent, like I am sometimes, but not always. [hammer]

Some folks have values that keep our base human nature in check. We can't assume those willing to live off the profit of others to have those values.

These transactions should be traceable back to whose card was used and what was purchased. Expecting any kind of accountability for our government dollars being pissed away? I'm not holding my breath.

OtterbatHellcat

IMO, it is human nature to be opportunist minded. That mentality equally benefits those on the dole, and those in big business....and everyone in between.

However, I completely agree with Roberths' interpretations, as mentioned.

Mob mentality for personal benefit or gain, as opposed to alternate methods of "rioting".....which usually ends up in thievery anyways.

I realize that our current prez acts like a king, but congress would have to legislate the end of entitlements. Ending entitlements are unpopular for almost 1/2 the population, so legislators whose only concern seems to be maintaining their power would never do it.

There won't be any accountability and that leads us to another facet of human nature. When bad behavior goes unpunished what do we get, witness illegal immigration, we get more and worse bad behavior.
