View Full Version : 22WMR vs 17HMR
I'm in the market for a new rifle and my choices are between the 22WMR and the 17HMR. Primarily the rifle will be used for small varmints usually no further than 150 yards. I understand that the 17 is going to be more accurate but I like the idea of the larger bullet with the 22. Those of you will experience what would you go for and which gun? Also, what is the price difference in the ammo?

I've not shot a 17hmr, but do own a 22wmr, and have loved it for years. Great 100-150 yard prairie dog gun. (Ruger M77/22 3x9 bushnell)
Ammo cost right now is about 12-15$ for 50 rounds of WMR. I believe the 17hmr is comparable. Hopefully someone else will chime in on 17.

I have never shot a 22WMR but I love my 17hmr rifles. Great round for PD out to 200 yards. You should also consider the new 17 WSM.
I can't speak to .17, but having spent time behind both a .22LR and .22WMR, I'd opt for the .22LR if both "accuracy" and "150 yards" are used in the same sentence. I realize .22LR isn't on your shopping list, but 150 yards isn't all that far for a good .22 rifle...and they suppress a whole lot better than .17/.22WMR.
Thanks for the advice so far. Lots of things to consider.

I have had both .22WMR and .17HMR.
I still have the .17HMR. Never could get a .22WMR to run the way I wanted it.
Savage 93r17 TR. Amazing gun. One hole at 100yds if I do my part.
