View Full Version : Where to store magazines?
So, I don't have room in the safe for all of my pre-Colorado ban magazines. In the past I just kept them in the closet. I figured if anything happened to them I would just buy more. Needless to say, I can't legally buy more of them now.
So, other than investing in another safe just for magazines, what would my best option be?
I currently have them stashed away in a hidden spot under lock and key.
Maybe that is good enough.
Thoughts?
30 rd. AR magazines? I'd have to go look, but I'm pretty sure I have 10 or 12 of them in a .50 cal. ammo can. Don't have it locked away, but it's a handy container.

Mostly trying to secure all of my magazines over 15 rounds to prevent them from being taken should my home be broken into.

Some of the members here would need an extra large safe just for the magazines........ This is a good topic since the standard Capasity Pre-ban magazines are now priceless in the underground market in our fine state.

Those are the people I am hoping chime in. Buying a new safe just to secure a bunch of magazines seems a bit silly. Maybe putting a dead bolt on a closet door is good enough? Or locking them up in a cabinet in the garage or something?

Do you have any clearance to make a magazine rack on the safe door?

Get a stack on metal gun closet. Mount it to the wall in your closet and then put clothing in front of it or something to that order.

Just put them in your attic or closet in a box marked "Christmas Decorations" No one will even bother with looking in it.

That was my thought as well.
I use to store ammo and mags separate. Now I load all my mags with ammo and store them in fat 50 cans. I can fit 28 pmags in each can.
Some people I know store them in plastic bins in their kitchen.
I just store them in my footlocker,it has a top tray I have some molle geared stowed in plus it has a hasp that so I can keep it locked

Not really. I could probably get ten or twenty of them on there if I really tried but I'd rather keep them all together in one place.

Not a bad idea. Heck, maybe even put some actual Christmas stuff on top of them in the box.
Won't the grandkids be surprised when they go to put up the Christmas decorations. Look what we found... giant Pez dispensers with no heads. That candy is pointy. [LOL]

I keep extras in a tattered cardboard box marked X-Mass. I have some in a plain cardboard box stashed in a closet with extra jackets and the fold out dinner trays. You can stash extra mags just about anywhere. I keep ammo and mags separate from the guns and from each other, no reason to make it easy for thieves. All camouflaged and out of plain sight. Step into my house or garage and you would never know I own a firearm.

Pick up a used file cabinet, off CL, for $10 - 20. Throw a few bricks in bottom drawer for weight. Put n eye bolt top & bottom, then a rod or flat steel, with a lock, for deterrence.

I like the Christmas decoration box idea... just don't lose track of them!!
Cut a very thin piece of plywood to fit into the bottom of your sock drawer.
Lay down the mags in the empty drawer and place the plywood on top - false bottom.
Either put a pull tab on the edge, or drill a finger hole in the false bottom for removal.
Get a used outdoor circuit breaker box.
Mount it on the wall in the garage.
Add some empty conduit going to the ceiling or to the real breaker box for authenticity.
They already have a tab on the bottom for a small padlock to keep the kids out.

Our grandkids would love it and hang them on the tree.
Or ask for red and green paint to decorate them.
I've been wanting to get one of these. Fill it with ammo boxes until it is a good 1000 lbs, and if the thieves can get it out of the basement, then they deserve it.

If you are using PMAGS, here is a bit of info for you. Don't ask me how I know but (16) 30-round pmags fit nicely in a 50 cal ammo can with enough room for a pelican 40 gram dessicant pack for long term storage.

Subject: RE: PMAG Question (Long-Term Storage)
Thank you for your inquiry. The factor that truly wears out quality springs is compression cycles, not constant compression. However, we use a high-quality stainless steel springs in our PMAGs and if one ever does happen to wear out any USGI spec spring can be swapped out for the factory one.
Regarding the question of how long, we’ve had magazines fully loaded for over four years now with no Impact/Dust Cover on and have experienced no feed lip or spring issues. With the cover installed storage life is considered indefinite. There have also been PMAGSreportedly tested to hundreds-of-thousands of rounds (military vetting), and we know positively of ones that have gone tens-of-thousands, so usable life is quite excellent too.

funny you should say this. I read one of the cheapest, secure, areas to store valuables is the dirty laundry basket. One guy said he put a few "soiled" pair of underwear in there. He was robbed and that was never touched. He used some reddish brown food coloring to "replicate" the look. Guess a trash can with 1 or 2 tampons dipped in red food coloring would do the trick. Unless some freak broke in, like that guy hiding in outhouses. [hahhah-no]

Ok, I'd like to know how somebody "got 16 30-rd. Pmags nicely in a .50 cal ammo can"! A "fat .50" SAW can I can see, but the best I could do is 14 in a regular .50 can!

okay, so the ones laying flat are alternating head to toe(69) 7 layers. The two that are there on the end are at an angle. Dust covers are filling up the rst of the space.

Well, hell...no dust covers? That's cheating! I prefer to leave 'em on, and I don't need 16 per can anyway. I'm good as is.

[LOL]
If your garage walls aren't drywalled, you could mount a 2x4 between two studs, stack a shitload of mags on it, then hang a cabinet over them to cover up. You can hide all kindsa shit in walls all over your house with a little imagination and strategic placement of coverup objects. I've often thought about things like this, just too lazy and and not paranoid enough to actually do it.
The possibilities for hiding things are endless, depending on what you want to hide, how deep you want to hide it, who you want to hide it from, how accessable you want it, how much work you want to do, and so on. Guess I have a twisted imagination.

Use empty paint cans. Clean out a few gallon cans and fill them with whatever you want. seal them up, maybe even add some extra paint for effect, then put them on your paint shelf or near your tools. I doubt criminal would break into someone's house and start opening up gallons of paint with a screw driver...
as an added bonus, when you want to move them, paint cans have a built in handle and stack nicely too.

Anything that could easily be perceived as junk really.... Hollow out an old printer, a box of old clothes or shoes (or Christmas decorations), a pile of old blankets, an old clock, etc. Making something appear undesirable, combined with harder access is the recipe for success for this scenario.

I think he's being crazy like a fox, he's thinking that by posting all this storage info when he gets burglarized they'll spend too much time looking through old broken printers and computers, dirty laundry hampers, broken christmas decorations, worn out ski clothing, dried up paint cans and dirty oil containers. They'll run out of time and leave with nothing of value, might be the way to do it.

Hahaha good luck! Police response time in my neighborhood has been under 10 minutes lately because we had a series of break-ins. You'll spend at least 10 mins opening old cans of eggshell paint and looking for old computer equipment and I'll have plenty of security footage of your ugly mug digging through my Christmas decorations...
