View Full Version : My Pikes Peak hill climb crash update with X-rays
After three months of little more then bed rest I started PT. At the end of the first day I got to stand for the first time with some help. The next week I was able to stand from a chair using only my legs. I know it may not seem like much but standing on my own was pretty awesome. My PT lady has me doing some weird things like picking up marbles with my toes but most of it is basic exercise and massage of injury areas.
It will probably be 4-6 more weeks before I can start to walk. I should be race ready in the spring.
here are a few X-ray pics. First is my elbow then left femur and last is my right ankle.

Were you on the bike that crashed and was airlifted out in the am, or were you that crazy one that finished the race with broken bones?

Damn Mike... hardcore!
Speedy recovery my friend!
I was the first helicopter ride out. I'm not sure if anyone could ride with a compound femur fracture, I know I couldn't :)
wow that heal xray is crazy, they could not fix any more screws in there if they wanted to. good luck with the recovery.

I was up above tree line in the switchbacks, and heard when you went down. Got to see the chopper lift you out as well. May have a pic of your chopper taking you to town, lol. There was one bike that went down near where you did I believe, broke his wrist or something and finished the race. I'll prolly be back up there next year as well

That hurts just looking at it. I saved the two plates I had in my arm but the hip surgery hurt the worst. Heal up fast and listen to your PT.
Holy crap, Mike. All that hardware is gonna make flying interesting....
Stop by the shop sometime...
There was two other riders I know of for sure that crashed the same turn I did. One might be the guy who was able to finish. The other was a friend named Alex. His injuries were worse then mine, he get to go home from Craig hospital in a few weeks.
Jim as soon as I can drive I'll be by. Ro is my only means of transportation.
So....what does your knee say the weather will be like tomorrow? ;-)
That femur looks pretty rough...and I can't believe how many screws went into your heel. Glad to hear there's some progress. Progress is good.

There was at least one other bike crash I'm aware of, and one sidecar crash as well, plus one of the electric cars I believe lost it. Most seemed to have happened in the same basic area, if not the same corner. They all seemed to happen right between one of our stations and where a race safety guy was at. I was thinking the electric car crash was airlifted too, but I was too busy counting bikes passing my spot and tracking cars coming up.

I have not watched the video yet but I was number 250. Bike was blue and neon orange and I was in white and orange leathers. In at least one of the videos you can hear me tell the first guy on scene that my left leg is broke.

That wasn't it. Way too mild. You can find the video in the original thread (https://www.ar-15.co/threads/113761-Pain-pills) if you're curious.

Oh wow, I was at that turn, it was about 100 feet past the half way point. It seemed to be a rough one, more than one person layed on the brakes hard at that turn.
One guy guy managed to pull it out and continue.
I hung out with the first bike rider that went down, there was a pretty bad language barrier. But we all speak beer. [Beer]

Heal Quick!!
I remember all the rehab and pain when I injured myself and it was not even close to your level.
I do remember the joy of being able to stand minus crutches with minimal weight bearing and just flexing the joint.
Stay fouced on the PT

That corner was a bad one. I think all or the majority of the wrecks were there. We didn't have any above treeline as I remember. We got pics of the majority of the vehicles that went by thru the day. Here's to quick healing, maybe you'll blow my doors off in 2014!
Registration for 2014 opens in 10 days.

I think around 3:50 seconds is where the bad corner is IIRC, you can see a lot of rubber left on the road approaching. He zipped by me around 7:48. Had one of the quads catch the inside edge and nearly spun into me, lil pucker factor there.

I hope your recovery goes quickly.
Wow you could open up a ace hardware with the amount of metal they put in you!
Hope you heal quick and get back out there!
