I can't remember any kids I went to school with having any food allergies, especially to peanuts or peanut butter. Seems to be the trend nowadays.

I wonder WHY that is ?
Seems like more and more people are allergic to something.. unlike myself whom is allergic to nothing... sure maybe 1 or two days in the spring some hayfever might kick my ass but it just gives me a stuffy nose and red eyes.. for literally not more then one or 2 days .. and not even every year... just randomly.. and growing up I was allergic to one dog.. just the one.. somethign about one of my friends dogs left me stuffed up and red eyed. but only that one dog and not even the breed ( been around others of the same.. no issues)
but back to the topic ... Why are more and more folks allergic ? ESP the whole peanut thing. I remember hearing about it in the past.. but the last 10-15 years seems like everyone has it .
When I was a kid, we were too poor to be allergic to any specific foods.
I also don't hear about allergy problems in poor countries who receive our aid packages with milk, wheat, and peanut butter contents.

I was severely lactose intolerant as a kid. Even at kindergarten age I knew if I had dairy I'd be puking in a few hours and stayed away from it. They didn't take away milk from everyone else because of the 2-3 of us that couldn't have it.

Just wait until Colorado public schools gets the close to $900,000,000.00 with amendment 66! Yes that's 8 zeros! It's just starting. Just like Obama care. Lunches, IPads, pensions, guaranteed work for even the shitty teachers and leverage on your children because the education system is always right. At least with the private schools they have to answer to the parents even though some go overboard. But atleast they are about focusing on the kids education and give a shit.
I wonder WHY that is ?

Well, being someone who has a life threatening peanut allergy... along with a whole slew of other food allergies... I can speak to this a little bit.
One theory about peanut allergies is that anyone who has a parent that is allergic to anything (be it penicilin, bee stings, or something else) is pre-disposed to developing food allergies...
Now, have you ever heard that a child under the age of three should not be given shellfish? A kid who is pre-disposed to having allergies should also not be exposed to peanuts before the age of 3. With society being so "fast paced" any more, everyone is just throwing something quick together for their children... Including PB&Js. Because of earlier exposure and more people being allergic to things to begin with, more and more people are becoming allergic to peanuts (or gluten or milk or...)
Of course there are some schools of thought that say that you should start kids at a younger age of exposing them to the allergens to prevent allergies... But who knows. There hasn't been ENOUGH research done in order to figure it all out. I grew into my allergies, so I was able to eat peanuts/peanut butter/chik-fil-a/etc. all the way up until my senior year of hs/freshman year of college. I had finally found a great alternative to Reeses pb cups when I discovered my milk allergy (not intolerance, but allergy.) Life (or at least the eating part of it) pretty much sucks for me.
Actually not.

There is a theory that the real reason for "peanut butter" allergy is a fungus that produces aflatoxin. Maybe some kids are actually dying from aflatoxin shock?

I was going to just slam you for that comment, but figured to just stand up for the gluten free people instead because you are uninformed. my wife is gluten intolerant. she felt so bad they were actually looking for cancer in her. people who are gluten intolerant have severe intestinal issues similar to diverticulitis or crone's disease. she was absolutely miserable. avoiding gluten has given her her life back.

-as are 95% of all Boulder residents in spite of medical estimates stating "the condition is thought to affect between 1 in 1,750 and 1 in 105 people in the United States". It was a bit of an inside joke that apparently rankled a few feathers. My wife interviewed someone for their department a few weeks back and was told by the candidate that if they were hired, nobody in the building would be allowed to wear deodorant or perfume as they were "scent-intolerant" and chemically sensitive.
I'm aware that peanut butter, gluten, lactose, deodorant, et al cause problems for some people, I am simply waiting for next years batch of diseases as I live in a town where food intolerances are more than a disease, -they are full-blown fads. I'll go sit in the corner now :(

Most peanuts produced, except for Valencia peanuts, are contaminated with microtoxins. However, it's also possible that all the other 'crap' in PB isn't helping. As with most foods these days, they're a very long ways from their natural state...

It also doesn't help that the wheat we grow today isn't the same as the wheat we grew fifty years ago. In order to increase production, several wheat varieties were hybridized (not GM) together to allow higher planing densities. One byproduct of that was the gluten content went up which is likely the cause of the increase in gluten intolerance/allergies.

My nephews aren't technically allergic to gluten or soy but they both have definite reactions to those food items. Their reactions range from skin outbreaks to prolonged nausea. I think one factor (and only a factor) is our increasingly sterilized culture. Everything is individually triple-wrapped and wiped down with antiseptics and antibacterial agents. When I was a kid, everything came in a single bag (if it was wrapped at all) and the bag was used to keep stuff together more than to protect them from the environment. No one used plastic gloves to handle food and we observed the 5 second rule (and hell, probably stretched that 5 seconds if the morsel was particularly tasty and the ground didn't look nasty).
I firmly believe that ultra-hygienic practices have also made our bodies less tolerant of things they aren't expecting. I'm not advocating cafeteria workers to go hocking loogies or sweating on the food they're serving but I do believe we need to rethink the frequent use of all these anti-bacterial sprays and wipes and the over-sterilization of our living environs.
Of course, this isn't the only factor -- the proteins and pollens we're dealing with have changed over the years too and may be just as much a factor. I'm not anti-GMO by any means but there is a suspicious correlation between the start of these increasing allergies and when we started changing the basic make-up of a lot of the food we eat. NB: Correlation is not the same as causation. Repeat after me, correlation is not the same as causation.
I was severely lactose intolerant as a kid. Even at kindergarten age I knew if I had dairy I'd be puking in a few hours and stayed away from it. They didn't take away milk from everyone else because of the 2-3 of us that couldn't have it.
To be fair, lactose intolerance isn't triggered by airborne particles nor are the conditions as severe as anaphylactic shock. I'm pretty annoyed by the idea of an extremely small minority of people imposing their condition on a huge number of people (e.g., schools banning a major source of inexpensive protein because one or two kids are vulnerable) but the schools are stuck between a rock and a hard place when they're dealing with something as severe as anaphylactic shock. Either the very small minority of kids is segregated away so the majority can continue as they were or the majority has to subject themselves to conditions that allow the minority to participate. For good or bad, the courts have consistently chosen the latter course.

I said "CAN BE". Some people's allergies are less severe, but they can get worse over time.
And I was very tired when I was typing this and meant to say "peanuts" rather than "peanut butter".
(Also, peanuts/peanut butter/etc. can leave behind trace amounts, cross-contaminate things, etc. and you wouldn't know that it's there. That is why a kid eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich could be very dangerous if the kid doesn't wash his hands, then picks up something that the peanut allergy kid later touches.)

...and here we go again.[dig]
ETA: After further contemplation, you've convinced me. Pre-schoolers should be allowed to bring pot in their lunches.
I believe that if you are alergic to airborne stuff, instead of asking others to not bring or wear the alergen, you should wear the appropriate protective gear.
