It wouldn't be so bad if they had built the reactors to US spec with containment facilities(big concrete domed shaped building) .Same with Chernobyl. Adds alot to the cost of a nuclear plant, but cheap compared to the failure cost. US company GE sold them these plants...

What's most annoying about all this is that the failure of 40+ year old technology is used to damn much safer modern technology (and even then both in Fukushima and Chernobyl it was failures of people to follow proper existing safety protocols that caused the failures, not deficiencies in the technology itself).
Pebble-bed reactors cannot meltdown and aren't any more expensive to build.
They were planning on decommissioning fukashima in 7 years and gambled on the cost of safety updates
They lost
All those Godzilla movies turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I want to say you aren't funny and call you a cupcake. But this IS funny.

There's been a lot of talk about bluefin (traditionally the most sought after fish for both traditional sashimi and sushi) having been affected about as badly as any other seafood by the Fukushima meltdown. I tried to find a map that shows radiation dispersion after the initial quake but can't seem to locate the one I'd previously seen. In essence it shows how levels of radiation, although small, have been found in a wide range of pacific species at this point as far away as the West Coast of South America. That, combined with that floating island of trash in the North Pacific which has caused plastics to have entered the aquatic food chain is less than optimum news for seafood.
Atlantic bluefin stocks spawn in the Gulf of Mexico which had the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in recent years and the verdict is still out on the longterm impact that will have not only on the migratory pelagics but on resident fish stocks there that provide a food source for those bluefin. As such, Atlantic Bluefin (whether caught off of NC/MA/Nova Scotia, or even over in Europe), from waters that have recently not had too many environmental problems are fish that spent their early life in areas that have had rather considerable issues lately.
No damage from this latest quake off shore.
These folks live on a chain of volcanic islands. Nobody there should be surprised by earthquakes and tsunamis.
Fukushima Daiichi has reactors built by GE, Toshiba, and Hitachi. One of the major problems with the incident was the type of fuel used in the #3 reactor - Mixed Oxide Fuel (MOF). MOF contains plutonium in addition to uranium. Plutonium is quite toxic.

Most worrisome of all is plutonium-239 — for a number of reasons. First of all, the vast majority of a fuel rod is made of plutonium, which means there’s just more of it in play. What’s more, says Helfand, “It’s extraordinarily toxic.” Plutonium exposure usually comes from inhalation rather than ingestion, so it’s mostly associated with lung cancer. What’s more, plutonium’s half life is 24,000 years, which means anything released in Fukushima today could be around at dangerous levels for up to half a millon years.
Pebble-bed and Thorium reactors are pretty cool technology.
This is why I don't like Nuke Power...

Unless it runs on Obama's farts, you don't like anything.
I hear he likes guns.
...and voting for people that want to take them away from us.
...but there's already a thread for that.

I'm not a real fan of nuclear anything since a nuclear weapons accident killed my father in the Air Force. But I would command a nuclear powered starship if given the opportunity. Hint to Obama...

Poor japan, another quake, but that size isn't going to do a lot of damage where it was located at, and isn't strong enough to really make waves. Funny part about the liberals who are against about every source of power out there, they offer no legit solutions. They aren't running their entire house on solar power to prove it is practical are they? They aren't willing to make the sacrifices themselves. Nuclear energy has a lot of pros to it, but also a lot of cons, but that is the nature of things. The more benefits something has, typically the more detractions it has too.

Godzilla
Godzilla + a giant exercise bike w/ generator = 2 problems solved
