View Full Version : Avs net minder- Semyon Varlamov- arrested on DV related charges
Well crap! It looks like just when things are going good for the Avalanche, something bad has to happen. Goaltender, Semyon Varlamov turned himself in to DPD on domestic violence related charges from yesterday. One count of 2nd degree kidnapping (F4), and one count of 3rd degree assault (M1).
KUSA - Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov turned himself in Wednesday night to Denver Police detectives for domestic violence related charges.
According to DPD information officer Sgt. Steve Warneke, the arrest stems from an Oct. 29 conflict, and an arrest warrant was issued. Varlamov has been charged with third-degree assault and second-degree kidnapping.

If anyone remembers, Patrick Roy, then a goalie as well, had DV related charges (Criminal mischief) dismissed back in 2000... Let's hope this gets cleared up, especially with our 10-1 record right now.
I'll wait and see what the investigation finds. It's not like we don't have a quality backup goalie.
I wouldn't call 2nd degree kidnapping a mere DV. If he is convicted he needs some quality time in the slammer. The team should suspend him until this is cleared up.

The kidnapping charge can be ………. odd…..
is it really kidnapping to take your own kids ?
wait for FACTS before you pass judgement

Seems to depend on if the taker has an affirmative defense for taking the children from the other parents. For those less experienced in law, the excuse for criminal behavior is called an affirmative defense. In family law, it's also called a vagina.

FIRST thing I thought of when I saw the story.
Seems Patty Roy has been teaching him more than goaltending.

I think it's just the nature of most hockey players...but I tend to stick to the innocent until proven guilty line of thought with hockey guys.
Now if this was a Bronco/Rockie/Nugget...I don't think anyone would even think twice. Guilty, lock him up and throw away the key.
Well it is now apparently a conspiracy to weaken the Russian Olympic team (http://kdvr.com/2013/10/31/official-avs-goalie-arrested-in-conspiracy-to-weaken-russia-olympic-team/)

This sucks. We'll have to wait and see what the investigation brings up. As KS63 said, Jean-Sebastian Giguere is a good net minder as well. I did hear on the radio that Varly will be alowed to travel to Dallas today, though.
Even if he's allowed to play, there's no telling how this rattling around in his head may affect his performance.

2nd degree Kidnapping is usually charged when you restrict someone from leaving- which from early reports is sounding like what happened. He beat her, then when she tried to leave he stopped her from doing so. Not all the facts are out yet, so we'll have to see how this plays out. The radio said that he's allowed to travel (like Sharpie stated), and the GF will be speaking to the media sometime soon about the ordeal. The question is, and Pugnac put it well, will he get "special" treatment because he's a famous athlete? I concur with Pugnac that since he's a hockey player we should pause and reserve judgement until more comes out, but had he been a NFL or NBA player, yeah... whole different story. Like I asked some friends today: Why are goalies so angry? Is it because they don't get to skate and hit?

He will be starting in net tonight so the Avalanche organization isn't concerned about the charges. He shouldn't get special treatment but he is innocent until proven otherwise. I wonder if I'd be cooling my heels in jail awaiting trial for 2nd degree kidnapping or if I'd be out on the streets, maybe it depends on how good the defense attorney is.
Yep supposedly he will be in net tonight
Don't give a rats ASS who he is. Commit DV, go to jail.

Has nothing to do with his attorney. Bond was set at $5k. That's about average for the charges. He paid the bond, and he's out.
Same thing for you.

He did go to jail...
You all act like the charges were dropped. He still has to go to court.

Meh. I like Varly. I have my own thoughts on the whole thing.
I don't think much will happen. He's not going to go to jail. That's almost a given as it's his first offense.
I think there is more to the story. But I'll keep my opinions to myself.

Pro athletes/celebrities are also walking around with targets on their backs. I'll let this play out in the judicial system and see if there's anything to it.

Yeah...everyone should know that there is a lot more to the story than what we all hearing about at this time.
I would also add that no matter how much the lady pissed the guy off, ya can't be smackin' a lady up either. We'll see.
