First off most of the late elk seasons are private land only so if you have that option go for it. The antelope season Dec 5-9 is for youth only (12-17) and you have to have an unfilled tag from the regular season. Antelope has one season for rifle public the rest is private or youth.
Elk does have some late public land seasons but it is only in certain areas you just need to figure out what you can or can not do.
My advice is pick a area and scout the place out. CO has the highest elk population in the world you just need to be willing to do what it takes to bag one.
If you have a specific area in mind I might be able to give you some ideas.

My brother-in-law goes to Craig area and my friend goes to the Eagle area. I do not mind hunting with them but I am up for something new and different. This will be my first true hunting season, as for the the other times I have gone to help do all the dirty--- no, fun work.

Pick somewhere away from the crowds. I went near Craig last year and rubbed elbows with way too many people for my taste. I don't have horses or Quads so I'm sh!t out of luck when around hundreds of hunters who do. I'd get up super early to hike in just to get run up on by horses and guides who are more outfitted than I. Go remote and go somewhere that isn't a well known spot. Thats my CO experience. WY is better anyways for hunting. Easier regs anyways. Maybe too many libs work down at the DOW. They seem to like staking the odds up against hunters here in this state. CO is in my opinion a out of state hunters paradise. That is...way to much catering to the non-locals. And again this is my opinion. I don't want to offend any CO hunting diehards.

That was the problem last year when I was helping my brother-in-law up in Craig. I saw three groups of hunters, maybe 3 in each group, go after 1 small heard. I just want to get somewhere that I can hunt but not get shot myself.
draw only units have fewer hunters, but may require at least 1 point to draw a tag.

I strongly recommend that you take some time and go talk to the local DOW office here in town. I've got a co-worker who did that last year for his first year of elk hunting and they really hooked him up with information.
He ran with the info and then went scouting a few of the areas they recommended; finally settling on a spot. He went back to that area several times through the summer and early fall to continue his scouting efforts and bagged a nice 5x5 by 10AM opening day of 1st season.
Here is the info for our local office (I see you are in the Springs too):

I most certainly will. I have been by there once, nice people. I have my Weatherby 7 mag ready for some food, now I jusst need to do it. Any other advice would be perfect. I have been reading the places to shoot threads, I am good at 100-150yrds, but I think I need some longer distance trainning. If anyone is going out for some longer range shooting and would not mind training a newbie let me know.

My little group always goes for the 4th season in mid November down in the Southwest between Dolores and the Lizard Head pass area. Expectations are the snow will move the Elk down, but it's been very dry the last two seasons. Still we got two Elk out of the five hunters.
