The Jalopnik writeup is pretty awesome. Averaging damn near 100 MPH on a drive across the US is pretty damn impressive.

Trust CNN to focus on Jamie Farr's sheik or Sammy Davis, Jr. in priest garb instead of Adrienne Barbeau in her jumpsuit ...

Didn't lick the link, but seen a report somewhere that in 09 a trio broke the record and it now stands at 28 hrs and ?? minutes.

Can someone in LE please explain to me how these events are not illegal? I mean the guys basically confess to breaking laws in several states and endangering countless lives.

Is it cool? Sure but advertising yourself breaking a law seems like a pretty open and shut case.

Not at all legal. Over the years, several attempts have been ruined by overnight jail stays. The LEOs could probably prosecute this, but most ov them have larger fish to fry, not to mention that most states won't extradite for a traffic violation if there's no accident/injury involved.

Yep. Mainstream media is always a bit behind the times.. Also, it depends on whether this was a "canonball" related sanctioned event vs two guys just driving across the country.

"Cannonball!!: America's Greatest Outlaw Race" by Brock Yates is a good read about the early '70 race. Amazon lists it.

Not legal at all and a lot of people that attempt it wait until statute of limitations is up before they tell their story.

I have the DVD. [Coffee]

This has to be next to impossible to do on today's roads. Be fun to try.

The comments on the article about people saying it is their RIGHT to stay in the left lane and drive the speed limit are infuriating.

One of my customers runs the Silver State Challenge, 200 mph in a 73 Cuda.

That's a cool Vid. Watch the cross hanging on the rear view mirror as he goes thru the corners.
