Saying it occurred in a "secure area".
How would one get a firearm in a "secure area"?

Funny how when the WH, MAIG or any other anti 2A group announces renewed efforts there is a "high profile" incident involving a firearm.

looks like an AR, but I didn't think they could have detachable mags? bullet button?
maybe an older one that wasn't registered, or maybe one brought into the state...wait...that would be illegal!!!!!! I got an idea, lets band together and make another law that says you must notify california if you are planning on bringing any guns into the state even if they are currently legal. this will surely stop these terrible things from happening. now they will have to break that law, the one that it is illegal for these assault weapons to cross the state border, another law saying you can't have one in an airport past security, and the others one not allowing you to shoot people and try to kill them, or even point it at them. one more law....its all we need guys!

If it is true that he is a TSA employee, my point is further proven. What is to stop terrorists or people who wish to do harm to get a job at TSA, or with an airline....or maybe not even a job that doesn't requires a background check or clearance or digging too deep....say something like a truck driver that drops off the food to the various restaurants, a contractor )electrician, plumber, etc) hired with all the fed money that gets dumped into every airport, the company in charge of filling the soda and candy and ice cream machines, the trash collection company that has to haul all that waste. Airports are mini citys, and requires every kind of worker.

All go through security. Daily newspapers go through. The soda goes through. They have special plastic bins that most of that goes through in. Electricians and plumbers typically do have to have checks of some sort and are issued badges. Although I agree that with so much material and so many people moving in and out, there are holes. But I don't think simply being an employee is one of them...

The picture above is past security.
Details will come out then we'll have a better idea of what went down.
Right now I'm most surprised that so few were injured. Either security was actually on the ball once the threat showed and dropped him fast or he was not a very good shot. (or just perhaps guns are not the WMDs they are portrayed as)

Our experiences differ. I have supplied material to many different electricians for DIA jobs and each one that worked post-security has been badged. I have no idea what the rules are, just what I have dealt with.

And it seems the rules for employees and contractors doesn't matter in this case because the guy started shooting outside security according to airport police.

Law enforcement and civil officials held a press conference around 2:45 p.m. Friday. Chief of Airport Police Patrick Gannon confirmed that a gunman arrived at Terminal 3 at 9:20 a.m. where he “pulled an assault rifle out of a bag and began to open fire in the terminal.”
Gannon said the gunman, who was not identified by authorities, then proceeded up into the screening area, where TSA screeners were, and he continued shooting. From there, the gunman went back through airport itself. He got past the checkpoint and moved further into the terminal. Authorities tracked him down and shot him near the Burger King

On Friday afternoon, the Los Angeles airport shooter was identified as Paul Anthony Ciancia, a 23-year-old L.A. resident with “strong anti-government views.” Those views were reportedly based on literature he had on him [ROFL1] at the time he was incapacitated by L.A. police. According to a report by the Associated Press, that literature included a note in which Ciancia said he “wanted to kill TSA and pigs.”

California is the test zone for gun laws on steroids and it does nothing to solve the lunatic crime spree problem. At least now it is confirmed that all the ban crap you can dream up and implement won't stop a lunatic that wants to kill people. Do you think anybody with a brain is going to say that another law that only limits what law biding citizens can do is going to stop any already illegal crime? It's only the fault of the tool of death (gun) when one of these lunatics shoots somebody, if the same guy drives a car through a crowded airport to see how many he can kill, then it's a problem of a troubled youth.

One of the best descriptions of the rifle used and the a good start to explaining the Cali law: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/11/02/21281046-motive-weapon-police-response-key-questions-remain-in-la-airport-shooting?lite

"How did he get the gun?Authorities aren't yet saying, but however he acquired it, he was carrying it illegally — loaded weapons are forbidden in airports unless you're a law enforcement agent with a special reason to have one. Even the TSA agents at checkpoints are unarmed.
But did the gunman have the weapon legally otherwise? Probably not. Authorities described the weapon as a .223-caliber AR-15 semiautomatic rifle. "AR-15" is a specific model made by Colt, but other gun companies manufacture knock-offs, which are often generically referred to as AR-15s. Transporting or importing most of those is banned in California.
There are exceptions depending on who manufactured the weapon or whether the owner has made several complicated modifications that can make it legal. Outside those exceptions, an AR-15 is generally defined as an "assault weapon," the transportation or importing of which is illegal in California (http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/cacode/PEN/3/4/2/2.3/1/s12276.1).
Gannon, the airport police chief, didn't specify the manufacturer, so theoretically the AR-15 used Friday could have been legal. But he also expressly called it an "assault rifle" — and transporting those is a felony.

This article has the same tired liberal analysis of the incident, with a few interesting tidbits

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_LAX_SHOOTING?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2013-11-01-16-42-54

first, the sheeple mentality (hide and pray):

They took refuge behind a ticket counter where she said people prayed, cried and held hands. She watched as one person jumped from a second-floor balcony to get away from the gunman.
"Adrenaline went through my head, my body went numb, and I said, `If I have to go, it's OK because I'm not going to feel it, but I have to save him,'" Rainer said.

second, the welcome absence of a "disturbing quality" in a person:

Ciancia's former roommate in Los Angeles, James Mincey, said he appeared to be unemployed but never showed any disturbing qualities, such as a fascination with guns.

luckily for all of us he wasn't fascinated by guns--if he was he would've been a kook!

just saw a CBS news report about a search warrant for the shooter's phone wherein they were looking for information about his beliefs about the "legitimacy of the operation of the United States government" and the "NWO." Then, without reference to his organization, they speak to a man who "tracks" these groups--Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center. There would be little difference if you had a black defendant and had a spokesman from the Klan on the news
