View Full Version : the fee rape never ends
Listed a few things I wanted to get rid of on ebay. holy crap, you sell something and get nailed with a selling fee from ebay, then paypal gets their fees, then if you don't link your checking account, another fee for them to send a check.
Should have just given it all to me and called it even.
I would definitely feel better about it!

Egay, used to be cool. There are still some okay things about it, but might as well have Obama running it nowadays.

What is really neat is that eBay owns PayPal. So really one entity is sticking you 3 times.

Total fees are about 10%. Should have told me

Don't forget they're collecting on shipping costs now too to prevent seller fee avoidance with low BIN's and high S&H.
I used to sell a few things on eBay, but the fees are too much money. I just sell stuff on Craigslist.

You guys kill me.... it's an auction website.... an online auction house....
Auction houses charge a 10% fee. That's how the auction house makes money.
Ebay is nothing more than a digital auction house.
You wouldn't bitch if you too your shit to a Richie Brother's auction and they charged a fee...
Wow... Everything should be free for you, right?

You could always try selling the items on Craigslist but you'll quickly realize that free is not always better. You'll ask a fair price of $100 for something and people will offer you $20 and some trident layers.

10% for running a website, and owning the preferred and recommended method of payment?
Spider restaurant for all the flies.
Egay used to be more friendly for both buyers and sellers 10 years ago.

Ok.... fine....
YOU start the website, maintain the servers, and keep the whole thing going...
Then, you start the payment system, maintain the servers, the accounts, and contacts with Visa Mastercard American Express.....
Do you see what I'm getting at? Shit ain't cheap, bro.
Ask Trot or J or Marlin how much it costs to run this very small simple site... Then do the math on a complex and HUGE website like ebay and paypal....
Aren't you one of the ones that argued FOR capitalism? Yet, when it's a company you don't agree with, it's not ok?

I agree that 10% is fair for an 'auction house', but eBay isn't one of those. With an auction house, you drop your shit off and they put it in a buyers hands. Then you get paid. With eBay, you do all of the work.
I don't mean to crap all over eBay. They provide a nice service. Like Otterbatcat said - they just used to be more reasonable.

I'll agree with that. They did gently caress you less a while back. But the only people to blame are the stores selling 100,000 products a week.

What Ebay did, was shit on the little guy....you know...the very people that got that company off the ground and into Walmart Domination status.
They messed with FB and what the value of that FB was to a small seller. Doesn't matter if the buyer read the TOS and bid anyways, bitch and complain about the sellers performance, and your ratings went to shit, listings to the bottom of searches, and fees and fines for non performance.....freezing your PP account, and other total BS. Ebay has not wanted small sellers since around '08.
Then, you start the payment system, maintain the servers, the accounts, and contacts with Visa Mastercard American Express.....
Ebay didn't start Paypal, they paid $1.5B for it.

I own a ski wax company and use eBay. I agree with you, but it has been a great avenue for me to get my biz going. I any for the day I can ditch it and go only retail or my own website. On that note my average sale is about $20 so I don't see as big of a hit to my $$$ also I price things to be sure I get what I want in profit.

I for one like getting paid in gum.

So in other words you like it better now as a seller than 17 years ago? It used to be simple and they made money and the seller made money? I opened my account in 96 and it has just become harder as a little guy to sell but then you have seen that a well.
Erape started into the flusher when the "third party" types got involved around 2004 or so. I bought an item from a seller and after a week was told it was "not in stock" I was like WTF??? you sold something that you did not have? Then I got the bit how the warehouse showed it was in stock when I placed the listing.........
Even though I have only bought and sold a few things in the last few years I always ask if the item is in the sellers possession.

I use to sell a lot of stuff on eBay, ran my little holster company for a while on there also. Now it is a last resort. The fees are high and service sucks. I can list the same AR mag pouches as everybody else but since I am a small company my shit gets flagged and taken down but its OK for the big companies to sell on there. Screw them.
<sarcasm>But their search function works so well...[facepalm][fail] </sarcasm> The 'compatibility' feature in eBay Motors lets people keyword spam like crazy.

I quit using eBay 5 years ago when they inaugurated their new user interface the same day we inducted another POS. I beta tested their new interface for months and was among many that said it not only wasn't an improvement on the old UI, it had all sorts of issues. They went ahead and declared it "gold" and the only time I've used them since was last spring when my brother asked me to get him something that wouldn't deliver overseas. Wasn't happy about breaking my "no eBay" pledge either but ... hey, he's family so ...

eBay(with their sub-company Paypal) is among the top anti-gun companies, and they are very openly anti-gun even when they know it hurt their profit, it all "for the greater good".
I don't use them unless i have to.
I sold a phone on there and the guy paid me and I sent it. Then when I needed the money I checked there was a 3 week hold on it. WTF! They said because I haven't sold 25 things only 24 that they put a hold on it. Needless to say I bitched and got my money. But I won't be using their shitty site to sell anything unless I really have to. And I haven't really had to yet.
Also, I notice 4 bogus charges on my paypal credit card in Brazil. Amounted to over $400 and before the money was pulled from my checking account I called them to cancel the transaction. They couldn't do anything about it. They credited the amount back and ran an investigation. I had to wait a week before it got transferred back into my checking account. Then after a month they said I could keep the credited amount because the retailer never got back to them. No cop involvement, no explanation as to how my credit card got used in another country. I haven't activated my new replacement card yet. They aren't even giving the cash back like they used to so its not even worth it anymore to use them.
I spend about $10 bucks a month for my website. Of course no one really uses it and I don't know how to gussy it up to get more visitors. But its not expensive to host a site. YMMV.

If you're looking to hire someone to improve the graphics, etc., try elance.com There are a lot skilled people in other countries who can do pretty good things with a small budget.
Pretty cool idea. I hope they can read and write english better than me.

It's not expensive to host a low traffic site that essentially uses spare capacity at a large ISP. It IS expensive to run your own major site complete with instant-online backups, major bandwidth and scalable architecture capable of supporting hundreds (or in eBay's case, tens of thousands) of simultaneous users.
