View Full Version : Help me pick a 22lr auto

Here are my criteria:
-Must be highly reliable, survive dings/drops, a field strip & wipedown gets 'er running most of the time...
-Must have readily available magazines (i.e. in a SHTF/Zombie scenario you might well find mags for it, like a Glock or M9/B92)
-I like stainless
-Factory option (or easy aftermarket/DIY swap) threaded barrel a plus
-Easy disassembly/cleaning a plus - some say the Rugers are a pain?
-Might need to nail a varmint/small game, but no 10m target work planned, mostly practice/plinking.
-Won't want a barrel over 5".
I've never had a 22lr pistol [Tooth] but from the reading I've done so far, here's what I came up with. Please vote/comment, and if you vote Other please suggest what you'd prefer to these options and why. Please forgive any 22-pistol n00b errors... and yes, I may end up looking at a revolver instead, who knows.
Thanks for your time folks!

walter p22. pretty good, but if it came down to auto or revolver, i go revolver hands down. the browning buck mark I hear is good
You can't go wrong with either the Buckmark or the Ruger MKI, II, or III. I personally have had the MKII and now have the MKIII. I've shot a Buckmark and would've probably went that route had I not gotten a deal on the Ruger.
Have the P22 and a Beretta Neos.. I like both,, The Neos is a little more accurate. But, the P22 is more fun to shoot..
Browning Buck Marks are great guns. I have shot mine so much that the barrel is starting to peen over from the slide hitting it. I have only had the mag catch fail on me and that was because it was a cheap plastic one. But a few dollars later I got a metal one from Browning. The buffer worn out too, but that didn't have any affect on the reliabilty of the gun.
I was going to say a GSG5 but you didn't want a long barrel. Darn good gun too.
100% buckmark! I have one and it's great!

I've only shot a MKI and liked it very much! I have a P22 and love that little gun....so much fun!!

Thanks for all the input so far!
P22 folks: no worries about knock-around reliability? I read some people had reservations about the quality of metal used in the slide... same for the Mosquito, though no one's mentioned that yet. Haven't handled either but I definitely liked the way the P99 fit my hand (I know the P22 is slightly smaller but similar). How does it fare with mixed ammo? I typically run MiniMags but like to experiment.
GSG5 definitely crossed my mind DOC, believe me, and if one comes up... we'll see.
Oh and I know I said barrel 5" or less... should have clarified that the Buck Marks and Mark IIIs at 5.5" are fine with me, just don't want more than that.
Cheers!
Mine has been banged around a bit... No troubles..
Can be a little ammo sensitive, just find the one it likes and stick with it..
Mine likes Reminington in the 550 packs, so I have no problem with that..

Thats wierd, mine really likes the Federal 550 packs and I'm on a Remington 550 pack now and it seems real sensitive to that ammo!
I have shot both the Misquito and the p22 and just from the borrowed time that I had with them the p22 barrel nut came loose but it shot very well. The Misquito jammed every round. Now these may have been flukes of the owners to loan a gun in that condition but IMHO that is what I noticed from the few rounds that I have gotten to shoot.
Here is my Buckmark. See the metal at the breach is starting to peen over and it isn't looking very pretty but it still goes bang almost every time. (there is some ammo that it doesn't shoot the first time) Yeah I put a rifle laser on it. Not sure why but it fits and I wasn't using it on anything else.

Well, the funniest part, is mine doesn't seem to care for "expensive" stuff..
But, it'll shoot the "cheap" stuff with no problems..
What do you want out of the gun? What will you be using it for?

I have a P22 and a Ruger Government Target model. I would recommend the P-22 for reliability. The Ruger was my first pistol, over 20 years old though.

I like my buckmark best (camper, 5.5" bull)

My brother has a buckmark and I have the Ruger MKIII. Neither one has ever malfunctioned as long as they were kept clean. Both have stalled a couple of times after running hundreds of rounds of cheap waxy Remington ammo. I mean hundreds of rounds without a cleaning. Keep them clean and use copper plated bullets and I don't think either will give you any problems. I bought the MKIII because I sold my MKI a few years ago and I missed it.
I like my Dan Wesson DA revolver best though. A friend has that 10 shot stainless Smith & Wesson revolver with the 6 inch barrel and that is a real joy to shoot. I am going to get one as soon as I can sell off some of my other guns. Anyone want a Browning take down .22 semi auto rifle?

+1 on the Misquito
I have tried a lot of ammo in mine and only mini-mag’s will feed in it.
I seen a great looking S&W 422 at the pawn shop on south broadway and Belview. I like those a lot and I think it was priced low. I have always like those because they look like Desert Eagles in a way.

Wow guys, thanks for all the additional ideas, reviews and such!
Our, uh, household economy has seen a substantial downturn since I started this thread and I don't expect I'll buy much more than ammo anytime soon, but if I get one of these I'll be sure to post.
DOC, I liked the 422's too, I know what you mean about the Deagle look.. I always liked how slim they are in the hand too, though I never shot one.
Great, now I gotta resist the urge to add the 422 to the option list, thanks a lot! [Roll1]
