I've never seen one in person, but these seem to be loved by darn near everyone.

I'm on the hunt for a few for the vehicles and for my bob.

I use them on the bed all summer for a cover if it cools down

They are great for a lot of things, except as an actual liner for a poncho. Must have for camping since it rolls up nicely.

Probably not the cheapest ($24.99), they have woodland as well. I usually buy my wool shirts from these guys, they haven't steered me wrong yet:

Surplus store in Englewood has them $34.99

Speaking of wool.... they have something similar to the Italian military wool blankets I really love them!

The Kifaru woobie is $150, but worth every goddamn penny. Packs light, stuffs down well, and is very, very warm. Definitely warmer than a normal woobie.

Always just called them liners. Now that said they were always nice to have. In the Medical Corps we used them with the old casualty blankets. I will say that the swiss poncho (listed as an add-on) is one big/heavy SOB compared to the old US poncho but your not going to get wet in it and for $9 I have a couple. [Flower]

correct... 8 years in the Corps and never actually used it in conjunction with my poncho.

I did for one night out side of the shelter half at Camp Pendelton in Boot. Other than that never again for its intended purpose. I love the damn things though, best combination pillow/blanket ever invented.

Every single day of field problems at fort drum involved the poncho, poncho liner, and the sleeping mat. Worst nights of sleep ever, but I stayed alive.

That's precisely the deal I was looking for. I just ordered 3.

Sleeping mat down, sleeping bag over it, wrap up in the woobie and cover with the poncho to keep the snow and ice off ya. Been there, done that.

Woobie is an Army term I still don't understand but Marines also have jargon that doesn't make sense.
I own many and like others have stated, its probably a top 5 field item

Yeah, they're handy. Would never pay $40 for one. +1 for Uncle Sam's Retail Outlet - I've spent way too much money there and they have great service! I have one rigged up as an underquilt for my hammock system. Instructions at hammockforums if you ever want to try it.

The nick name is derived from a child's favorite blanket.

Runners up were "Linus" "binkie" and "waaa"

I have several

To add on to Wulf202. It was derived from the child's favorite blanket and like children do, you bring it everywhere...I mean everywhere. Always in your carry on luggage, on the bus, in your back, and so on.

7 Years in the Army from active duty to reserves and never once tied this into a poncho.

I also have several. One in every vehicle. One in every pack. $40 is a bit expensive. Go the surplus store. Sometimes their used stuff is in great condition. Or check out a reputable online store that sells used stuff too and will tell you what condition the liners are in.

When we were kids we used take an old military wool blanket, slit it in the middle and wear it as a poncho.

The first few runs of woobies had head holes cut in them. Everyone complained and most sewed them shut. you can still find a proper poncho liner once in a while. I also use mine a lot and never with a poncho.

Hill People Gear Mountain Serape. way more versatile than a poncho liner.
They're a Colorado business as well.

It's my sleeping bag through early archery season, and goes in the bivy with the down quilt for cold temps. Great blanket but not real cheap.

Woobie was made famous in the "Mr. Mom" movie.

The Rat nailed it. The Kifaru woobie is spendy but worth every penny. I have one in my fly away bag and use another every night at work. Of course I still have several of the issued versions too.

i always have one in all of my sleeping bags. i unzip the bag to the point its comfortable temperature wise. And wrap up in the poncho liner. Although in the Corps we didnt call them woobies. I guess men dont use that term. Just Army.

Funny. When I was in the Army, we called them "poncho liners". Never heard the term "woobie" until this morning.

But then again we called Marines "track grease". :)
