A Little Bible study

Left & Right...

Origin of Left & Right...

I have often wondered why it is that Conservatives are called the "right" and Liberals are called the "left".

By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible:

"The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left." Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV)

Thus sayeth the Lord. Amen.

Can't get any simpler than that.

That's cute and all (I'll certainly repeat it) but left and right in political parlance comes from the fact that during the time of the French revolution the political factions in the National Assembly loyal to the king sat to his right and the revolutionaries (who were in fact communists ... the French revolution was the world's first communist revolution, not a free-republican revolution) sat to his left. After the revolution (and all the guys on the right were dead) they continued the tradition of the radicals sitting on the left, the moderates in the middle and the constitutionalists on the right.

Except only a few decades ago, the Republicans were the progressives and the Democrats were the conservatives. Republicans freed the slaves, and Democrats protested the civil rights movement.

EDIT: and before you take my post to suggest that the GOP would be in favor of slavery, I'm just saying that their core beliefs are to maintain the status quo in terms of society, and freeing the slaves was a huge upset to that.
