View Full Version : Lone Survivor Movie Screening
Cool opportunity to see the video before it comes out and support a great local organization. About half the seats are reserved already so jump on it if you wish to go. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/10/4e5utyvy.jpg

NY & LA on Xmas nationally on 1/10
It's a great movie but as with any book to movie it has a fair bit of inconsistencies. It did one hell of a job though memorializing the men of Op Red Wings.

The book had inconsistancies too, going to have to deal with that I guess.

Did you see the movie in NY or LA over Christmas?
There were more screenings than that..
I had to read the book again, just to remember things. They did a decent job, but the book wasn't exactly written by Tom Clancy.
Sent by a free-range electronic weasel, with no sense of personal space.
The screening was uploaded online. Movie was just ok. Kinda reminded me of tears of the sun with Bruce Willis.

I attended the screening in Littleton

Watched it last night-pretty intense I thought. Probably because it's a true story.
Was a good flick, started a little slow IMO but they did a good job on the movie. I have not read the book.
Good movie and not as much Hollywoodization of what happened. They could have spent more time on the rest of the team, especially as Lt. Murphy was awarded the CMOH for his actions that day. A few misrepresentations of what happened in the movie but fairly accurate. Really shows again how the larger military messes up things for SOF units, especially when dictating the use of previously allocated rotary wing assets. Overall, the movie is worth seeing again.

Watched it.
Liked it.
Question (for those forum members that have "been there"): Have tranquilizers ever been (or can they be upon request) part of the deployment gear for a mission like this ?
(I don't want to give away anything...but for those that have seen the movie, it seems like tranquilizers could have been useful.)

Sigh. Traqualizers like your screen name uses? How much would you use for a 120 lb man? How about a 200lb man?

If the other option is killing them anyway, then who cares?
It's a pretty good movie, worth going to the theater for. I didn't read the book but my buddy did and he said if the book's a 10, the movie's a 6. Just for reference.

Tie em to a tree and send a drone to drop off a note and a map or make an anonymous phone call to a cell in the village after the guys are sufficiently far away.

It seemed what they wanted to do was detain them in a less-than-lethal way, but only for a finite length of time. Sort of a "timed" detainment.
I thought a drug would be a good way to do this.
I don't know what, if any, types of "drug" options a typical team might have available.
That's why I was trying to find out--- if "drugs/tranquilizers" are part of a field med kit ( Is morphine in the kit? perhaps for pain management of severe injuries etc. ?) or made available to teams of this sort in other ways, from those of you that have "been there" and "know first hand".
I was not trying to indicate the team was stupid, or that "I know better".
I just wanted to know "could it have been a viable option to drug them".
To your point, maybe I should give "Q" a ring and ask him ?
HE'LL know the answer, for sure.[ROFL2]

Only thing I've had in my kit that might fit the bill to ko someone like that would be fentanyl. That's just a mess of ethics however IMO

I read the book, the team didn't have many options. They chose to abide by the Law of Armed Conflict and their mercy bit them in the butt but I suspect it did a lot for the US by demonstrating the quality of our warriors. The men were heroes even more in my eyes for making that choice.

Meh. They were overconfident. Typical SEAL who drank their own koolaid.
I've been meaning to read the book, but will probably see the movie before I get to it. These types of movies are better on the big screen.

It would be a big mess to operationalize and actually use, IMO. I would not recommend fentanyl for this application.
Read the book for the facts or attend the movie for the entertainment value. I attached a link which has quite a bit of information and background on the operations if you have interest. The author of the book, Ed Darack, is from Colorado.
Victory Point: Operations Red Wings and Whalers - the Marine Corps' Battle for Freedom in Afghanistan by Ed Darack
In late June 2005, media sources recounted the tragic story of nineteen U.S. special operations personnel who died at the hands of insurgent / terrorist leader Ahmad Shah--and the lone survivor of Shah's ambush--deep in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush. The harrowing events of Operation Red Wings marked an important--yet widely misreported--chapter in the Global War on Terror, the full details of which the public burned to learn.
VICTORY POINT reveals the complete, as-yet untold, story of Operation Red Wings (often mis-referenced as "Operation Redwing"), and the follow-on mission, Operation Whalers. Together, these two U.S. Marine Corps operations (that in the case of Red Wings utilized Navy SEALs for its opening phase) unfurl not as a mission gone terribly wrong, but of a complex and difficult campaign that ultimately saw the demise of Ahmad Shah and his small army of barbarous fighters.

You guys do realize this isn't a work of fiction, right? You can give a play-by-play of the storyline and you wouldn't give anything away...

It is mostly (more than half) ficticious. Lots of events were changed by Hollywood from what really happened.
We really enjoyed the movie and plan to go and see it again. We felt the movie stayed pretty close to the book on the important stuff (there were things changed for the movie) overall we felt the movie did a good job of honoring his bothers as the true American heroes they were.

Awesome flick. I saw a lot of people sitting in seats at end, many a tear, and at least 3 guys with hats down covering the fact they were upset.
Powerful movie, a fair amount of artistic liberty but overall the story made it point. And it was cool seeng Marcus in several scenes.

Definitely, but the major points like the incident with the goat herders weren't.
Did anybody else catch Marcus Luttrell as an extra in a couple of the scenes? I had to do a double take.
'Lone Survivor': Box-office mission accomplished with stunning $38M (http://movies.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=846858)
"Lone Survivor (http://movies.msn.com/movies/movie/lone-survivor/)," a gritty tale of courage and honor among American fighting men, broke out with a stunning $38.5 million triumph at the U.S. box office this weekend.
The Afghan war drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Emile Hirsch more than doubled distributor Universal Pictures' pre-release projections. The studio and most analysts had expected the searing and violent tale of a Navy SEAL mission gone awry to land in the high-teen millions over the three days. Instead, it posted the best opening ever on this weekend, and the second-highest January debut ever, behind only the $40 million opening of 2008's "Cloverfield."
It was a hit with critics coming in, but the patriotic themes of "Lone Survivor" clearly struck an unexpectedly powerful chord with moviegoers, who turned out in large numbers and gave the film a rare "A+" CinemaScore.
I saw it Saturday at the matinee showing in the Orchard with 4 friends. We spent the morning shooting, ate wings and beer at BWW's on hwy 7, then saw the flick. It was a great manly day with good men.
We all loved the movie and had to fight back tears at the end. As much as I enjoyed the movie, the book was still way better.

First thing that came to mind during that scene was to leave their hands bound behind their backs. Descent would have been much slower without the ability to use arms. Of course hind sight is 20/20.
They made the right choice overall and shows the morality of American troops as a whole. The few bad apples we hear about are the exception, not the rule.
Just read the entire book today.....man was it sad....the entire firefight was hard to read what a terrible situation to be in(terrible dosent sum it up)
does anyone know what happened to the village that protected him?
Big time eye allergies all the way through
I don't know what happened to the village but the man who saved him has been located and they are now friends. Marcus has brought him over to the US twice now just to spend time together. They've truly bonded, as can be expected. 60 minutes did a segment on their friendship recently.

Very very well done and I really liked the dedication at the end. Regal Theater at Interquest Parkway kept the lights totally off until the credits were completely done (movie rating came up before the dimmer started raising the light levels). I thanked one of the attendants for the gesture of respect for doing so -- not sure they intended it that way but I wanted them to realize it was perceived as one.
I saw it this morning with my wife. The tribute at the end was awesome. Probably the first movie I have been to at a theater where you never heard a peep out of anyone the whole way through.
