A couple of questions, please from the Long Time Lurker/New Poster about mounting sights: my setup: S&W M&P 15, pure stock. I just mounted a scope, Bushnell 1-4x with circle plex reticle, e.g. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/599425/bushnell-banner-rifle-scope-1-4x-32mm-circle-x-reticle-matte I mounted it in UTG quick detach high rings. The rear/ocular lens housing of the scope required that I remove the (non-flip) rear iron sight. So, here's my question(s): Since I'd like the BUIS, any idea if a flip up rear sight (Magpul, Troy, UTG, etc) would fit under the ocular lens, when folded down? Or maybe a better question is how tall are the flip up sights when folded down? Similarly, would the solution be cantilevered scope mounts to move the scope forward, hopefully enough to get a rear sight mounted to the rail? Any suggestions will be appreciated, and of course a less expensive solution is always preferable :-) -jb

Troys : .460" Profile When Folded

MI : .4375" when folded.

Thanks Bob.
I think that's telling me what I thought: the correct answer is moving the scope forward, via long cantilever ($) or mounted on a railed handguard ($$$). The scope ocular height above the rail is measureed in .1's, not .4's.

The good news is (1) I *love* the scope & reticle, and (2) it's designed with a loooong eye relief. So the mounting position is not critical.
I do appreciate the information, greatly.

Vortex has a 3" forward cantilever QD throw lever mount that works (rather worked for me until the great floods of 2013) to get the proper nose to charging handle and proper eye position for a long eye relief scope. This is with an MI folding rear sight that is just shy of the ocular when in the up position.

Ding ding ding, we (almost) have a winner!
Great help SSBob, thank you. The (almost) answer returns info for 30mm scopes. The referenced scope is a 1" diameter (arrgh).

BUT ... the concept works, 2-3" offset, and I'll do a due diligence search to find a 1" diameter, 3+/- offset mount. Failing that I may investigate (1) shimming the 30mm ring mount (not a pure solution) or (2) moving the scope to a Ruger 10/22 and starting over. Either will be a pricey answer, but education is priceless.

Thanks again for the input.

p.s. Best wishes on recovery from the Great Flood, I have friends in the northeast and it truly and completely sucks.

Or you could do the 45 degree mounted BUIS

Here is a low price option: http://www.amazon.com/Front-Degree-Rapid-Transition-Backup/dp/B006X9DLQM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384410508&sr=8-1

Actually the correct answer is to buy another rifle to use with iron sights.

Now this is the absolute best answer, also a good justification point to the spousal unit for getting another AR.
