Interesting that when it turned up missing after the doctor's death, it showed up in a Senator's possession.

The SAA came out in 1873, Jesse James was killed in 1882, and that gun got THAT beat up in 9 years? Where's the research on the mfg. date of that serial number? The gun went to Jesse's son after his death? Just how old was this son? Way too many holes in the story for me, but I bet some sucker will buy it.

Did firearms need a serial # before 1900? U.S. products were not required to be stamped "U.S." or "made in the U.S." until after about 1910. Was Colt different?

The link shows the Colt authentication that the gun shipped to a dealer in NY in April 1881.

James died August 1882.

The old photos show the front sight intact, the auction photos show the front sight broken off/removed. Exactly who broke it off/removed it, and when?

I think it's likely Jesse carried various firearms during his life. It's widely purported that he carried a Colt 36 Navy revolver, an Uberti 1860 Army Conversion, and a Remington 1858 at points in his life. Since posting the article this morning, I've learned Jesse's mother Zerelda is said to have traded many items that "belonged" to her son in exchange for services. (HERE (http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/americas-lost-treasures/videos/jesse-james-gun/)) The genuine provenance of many, many of these items is questionable. Perhaps it's like that line from an John Wayne movie, "This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
