View Full Version : Lets talk 30-cal cans...AAC vs. Surefire vs. TBAC

I'm trying to decide on what 30-caliber can to get. It will be used on 300BLK and a long range rifle, and for hunting. As you can see I like smaller cans, as I feel it wont make a huge difference with 300BLK and I don't think I can get any centerfire rifle can that will make shooting supersonic rounds truly hearing safe. I already have a 5.56 AAC can, so my 5.56 rifles already have that mounting system.
I'm looking at 3 cans, and I'll list my ideas of pros/cons of each. I'd love everyone's opinion.
AAC 762-SDN-6
Pros: QA mount compatibility, lowest price of the 3, quick attach.
Cons: Heaviest of the 3, longest of the 3, questionable repeatability mounting.
Surefire SOCOM762-MINI
Pros: Quick attach, indexed mount for repeatability, claimed reduced backpressure, shortest of the 3.
Cons: Most expensive, additional mounting system.
TBAC 30BAS
Pros: Lightest of the 3, threads on to brake for best repeatability, multi-host capable.
Cons: No flash hider mount available, not quick attach.
Thanks!
TBAC , the other 2 aren't in the same league for use on a precision rifle . QD mounts no mater how tight are not going to give the absolute repeatability needed and AAC's track record for their mounts is sketchy at best .
Personally I'd go with the full size can and not the short one .

Tbac 30-p1.
I went with Thunderbeast after the same type of research. I think Firing Line still has one in stock. Still waiting though.

Tbac 30-p1.
Not interested in leaving an AR without a muzzle device. Why wouldn't anyone get the BA?

Why did you go with the TBAC? Did you have other cans with different mounts?
There's plenty of TBACs around, I don't shop at Firing Line. Infact Silent Precision seems to be a great dealer and forum sponsor.

TBAC ........... unless accuracy is secondary.
TBAC for the win. The repeatability is far beyond any other can I have - DA or QA. The muzzle brake is stupid ugly but it works.
P1 and BA have the same internals and work equally as well . When precision is the goal a single point thread on can is going to give the most repeatable and consistent . The BA cans give you a muzzle device but still are basically a single point design . Both my 30P and 338BA both come on and off the gun repeatably with no zero shift from mounting and dismounting them .
Another vote here for the TBAC. I'd agree with Ward and skip the little can. My 30P-1 is very close to hearing safe so I shoot sometimes without ear pro if I'm only firing a few shots or they're widely spaced over time.
I've not tried the BA, so I can't comment on the repeatability.

Why would you take it off??
i just spin on a birdcage as a thread protector for my guns that normally wear a can.
I have a TBAC 338 BA and absolutely love it. My Shark 308 can is pretty much going to live on my 22s.

To put on my 308 rifle, or to put on another AR, etc.

AAC SDN-6
I have 2 surefires (556k and 556 mini), a TBAC 30p1 and an AAC SDN-6. The 51 tooth seems to handle fouling a lot better than the surefires. I'm not sold on the surefire ratchet system, they stick a lot more. The TBAC is awesome, but it's dedicated to my precision gun (thread on). I think the AAC is the best all around, only because I have put them all through the ringer. That's my .02
My TBAC has been on 6 different firearms. Just need a thread protector for safe or rack storage. If you want to put on a comp, just buy a lock ring in your thread size for the comp of your choice. EZPZ.

Was hoping you'd chime in. Surefire advertises the system not being in a high carbon area and that not being a problem, so that's interesting.

Can you elaborate on a lock ring for a comp?

Same concept as the carbonarms hand guards?

Islandermike runs his snd6 on his AI and his bulgy 74. He gets great accuracy. Don't get me wrong tbac makes a great product. But that is the only can I have a 6moa point of impact change with between no can and can. Granted it has great repeatablilty.
And I have the older style surefire, not the socom.

Is this the case on a number of rifles, or do you just run it on one?
I ask because I get some POI shift on my bolt gun but absolutely none on one of my AR's. I think it's more barrel dependent than suppressor dependent.

yep

That.
None of my suppressors, from .22 up to .30, stay cool enough after a few dozen rounds that they'd come off via "quick detach" unless I had nomex gloves on. I run a .30 suppressor on an AR all the time, I just spin off the A2, thread on the can and go forth.
In terms of suppressor weight, I can't recall any "lightweight" precision centerfire rifles. My TRG-22 (.308), with appropriate optics and bipod, weighed enough that an extra pound +/- on the muzzle would not have been remotely noticeable and none of the AI's or similar that I've shot were any different.
I'd put type of blast-baffle FAR ahead of attachment method or weight when selecting a new can. For all the hoops necessary to get them, I want any given can to last as long as possible and in that regard, they are not all equal.

Dedicated to my FN PBR. Here is the link to the conversation: https://www.ar-15.co/threads/71275-POI-change-with-Thunderbeast-30p1
