I can remember seeing bear traps as a kid, somewhere in our travels with my parents. Real ones are massive, HUGE, and not to be trifled with. A real one would have crushed his arm, period, and there wouldn't have been enough guys in that room to get it open without the right kind of clamps to compress the springs.
