Hope this isn't a totally stupid question. I'm looking at buying a used truck. I found one I like that started its life off in Canada. The autocheck report has odometer readings in kilometers and then later miles. When a US car is sold in Canada, does the odometer track kilometers or miles? Can it be switched between the two since everything is electronic these days.

I'm sure the electronics are a quick switch from miles to kilometers. I bought an ATV once that had the same thing. Dealer swapped it for me.

It depends on the vehicle, some newer vehicles have the option to change between the two. If memory serves me right, multiply kilometers by 6.2 and that gives you miles.

In Canada the odo will be in KM. Most vehicle will be able to be re-configured to dispaly the value in Miles, EXCEPT imports. Now, one bit of caution about Canadian market vehicle: some parts may be specific to a Canadian vehicle. Battery, brake pads, alternator, O2 sensor and they may be specific enough that you will either have to order them or adapt local parts.

Also: depending of the province, they put tons of salt on their road...

I moved from Canada to Co in 2000 with 2 cars: one import, one jeep. The import speedometer / odometer had to be replaced (800$) but when I was done fixing the jeep it cost me over 3k.... And the resale value is crap.

I multiply kilometers by 6.2 and that gives you miles.

KM X .62 = M

You could have an issue with emissions if you have to do the e-test thing where you live. I doubt Canadian vehicles had to meet U.S. Emissions standards. I might be wrong.

My Truck started out in Canada. If you look at the carfax it shows where it was imported/bonded/converted to US specs and released. Looks like yours is in the same boat. Mine is fine as to rust but then it was way up north in a tiny town.

We're on the same page, I just left out drop the last zero. That's how we did it in DE on the autobahn anyways.
