A couple of you showed interest when I picked this car up so I thought I would post an update.
The title of this thread says it all, this car is mostly built from friends spare parts bins and stuff I have laying around.
The goal is 300hp for 2500 bucks.

Another boost leak test, adjustable fuel pressure reg and some more fuel and timing tweaks in DSM Link and it will be ready for a couple dyno pulls.

1989 Eagle Summit

First thing I did was redo the intercooler piping, starting with the cold side.

Swapped the 14b it came with for a small 16G
Swapped in a turbo Tstat housing at the same time so I could run coolant, tapped the return into the heater hose the old turbo was oil cooled only.

Best builds are ones done from parts on hand and scrounged from buddies. [Beer]

More fun and not so harsh on the pocket.

What else ya got planned?

As much as I joke, this car is quite the sleeper. I'll hint that I saw a 2.0 liter head on a workbench last night...

Besides the final tweaks I mentioned above, I think ill be pretty close to my 300hp goal. The PO dynoed the car at 243hp and 248tq I believe, that was with the smaller 14b turbo, janked out intercooler piping, an awful exhaust layout and a really conservative (rich) tune.

Next will be wider (7") wheels and better rubber to quell the wheel spin. It spins through most of 2nd as is.
After that ill probably rock it till I break it.

Anything beyond that will blow my 2500 budget. I know that will eventually happen. I picked up a complete 6bolt 4G63 head for it the other day for 20 bucks.
The Evo 8/9 also use a 4G63 of sorts and you can use the springs & lifters, fancy valves, along with some updated 3mm lifters and some 264 or 272 HKS cams to make a pretty spicy head for these things. That should get it revving to 8K or a little more.

With the car weighing in at 3476 I have around 500lbs on most newer V8's and AWD cars.

The interior.. is another post.

That little car weighs 3476?! My 1990 Integra RS only weighed 2550 without me sitting in it.

there's no way that thing is 3500lbs. A 2nd gen GSX comes in at ~3200, same with STI's and Evos. I'm pretty sure your is right around 2300-2400ish.

Your both right, I pulled the wrong number off the sheet

GRVW is 3476, curb weight is 2380. Good call. I was rushing to finish that post so I could go eat delicious mexican food at Aceros :)

Ought to be fun. I do remember that my 87 Sunbird GT was 2500lbs and got it to 230HP with minor stuff but the torque steer was just about stupid. I always remarked that you better have it pointed where you want to go when you pull the trigger.[Flower]

I almost side swiped a 3rd Gen Camaro (at about 80 mph) on west 6th Ave in Golden before they repaved it.

EDIT: From the terrible torque steer in the previously mentioned Integra.

Wish I had any mechanic skill otherwise I think messing with old cheap cars for speed would be better than blowing 30k on STI or more for a mustang.

My 08 R32 is off warranty finally, but sadly been a bad financial year. I'd like to take it from ~255HP NA 3.2 v6 to a conservative turbo and maybe some intercooler/CAI/exhaust. I don't know if it's realistic but I'd like to get it up the 40 hp to ~300hp and not be adding such an aggressive turbo or anything that I burn the engine up in a year.

I'm also worried a bit about turbo lag, my GF's Juke (I Know) is actually quite zippy but at a light in a turn feels like there is literally no engine in it till it spools up. It was kinda explained to me that some of those Asian turbo's are pretty large and take a bit to get going, but a lot of the VW ones are much smaller, less boost, but get going really quick? THat's the one thing I'd hate to lose, is that with the NA, I can just haul off at the light. Just inevitably after the initial lead, my friends EVO and the like are going to overtake me. Not sure I'm even looking to top some of those cars, just would like a little extra power and add new spice to what feels slower and slower to me as I'm used to it. (And I already merge at +5 over highway speed up or down a ramp, get to the 65mph speed off a light in 6-8s.)

Of course my main limiter is budget and no idea what I can get done with 1-2k.

Irving

Intercooler and exhaust are a MUST if you put a turbo on there. The cost to correctly turboyour car would not even be worth it for only 40hp in my opinion. There is much more info we'd need to know about your motor to help you do it. As far as turbo lag goes, you won't really lose anything on mild set-up like you are describing. While the turbo spools up, your car will just feel like it normally would without the turbo; for the most part.

With you sitting in it it tipped the scales at 3200, right?

Thats the name of the game, smoke 300hp 30K+ cars, and then laugh about it (a lot).

For comparison purposes this car stock was rated at 98hp, if I hit my goal the stock bottom end will be taking over 3x what it did rolling off the line. Granted its not going to last forever but it go's to show you whats possible with a little research and some work.

As far as your R go's just hit the forums and see what people are doing, your HP goals may be within your budget.

This is hot rodding at its best. I would love to see the faces of the other drivers. I used to get kick out of merging onto the highway in a 850 turbo wagon. The kids always looked confused. You post is making me think...........

If I was gonna mess around like that they make some pretty nice kits to put LS motors in 240Z's. That would be fun.

I mentioned the blue wire mod and the road surge shift box in my first post. Ill go into detail on that a little bit.
This car is FWD auto for those who arnt familiar.

The blue wire mod increases the line pressure in the transmission to eliminate the slip that normally happens when the trans changes gears. This causes some abrupt, sometimes tire cherping gear changes but the trans never slips even at the 25psi its seeing now.

The road surge shift box is just a manual gear selector, black for up, red for down.

Right now its mounted in between the seats by the e brake. I want to move the display up into the dash for easy viewing and mount the buttons in the wheel for a full on ghetto paddle shifter setup. Still have to figure out the wiring on that though.

Fixed a couple boost leaks over the weekend and found one more. Boost gauge gos crazy at WOT, jumps around between 20-25psi. I think the next step is fixing the next boost leak and shimming the wastegate shut.

Getting back around to this project.

I have been fixing a bunch of little things, making timing adjustments in link.

Found a guy who converted his button box to paddle shifters using two cruse control stalks and some extensions from a VW.

Built a couple of these back in the day, not quite this nice looking, but scary fast.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/courtesyparts/sets/72157633382346760/

The really nasty one I set up was a radically destroked 400 with roller valvetrain that was stable to 9500 rpm. 670 HP on a rear wheel dyno, in front of a Doug Nash 5 speed...

Nice! My uncle is all about Z cars.

Not sure if this link will work but heres an older video showing the auto in action, no lifting, no slipping, full spool till you lift.

At 25 psi boost, I gotta wonder how long that engine's gonna run before it goes pop... I remember the Omni GLHS 2.2s having horrible head gasket problems.

Hahah.
This motor is on borrowed time. Its is a swap car, so its built off of an NA cast (not forged) bottom end with 160K on it. The guy who swapped it just added 2.0 turbo cams to the head and slapped a turbo, supporting ECU and fuel mods on it. Balance shaft delete, fresh timing set and OEM metal head gasket.
At 300ish hp it should hang out for a while assuming nothing catastrophic happens (sudden loss of fuel pressure, burnt plug at WOT, etc)
But, it WILL crap rod parts out the side of the block one day, I knew that going in. Ill probably pull all the goodies off and find a better, weirder DSM to mess with.
