View Full Version : Doctor Who
Is the music on the Doctor Who game on Google today from the original 1963 show, or the 2005 version?
My interest was piqued and I found the original on Netflix last night. Anyone watch Doctor Who? Is it worth watching just for rounding out my historical pop culture knowledge?
I would say yes. Tom Baker was the best Dr., in my opinion.

I finished the more modern one recently and loved it. Excellent show.
I suppose I should try the older one.
Today is the day of the doctor.

New is different, than the original. Have the entire "Event" DVR'd and getting ready to round out the day watching the warm up leading to the UNINTERRUPTED 2 hours.
This tidbit is interesting as it introduces John Hurt, some time ago.

I really did enjoy most of the ones I've seen. I like David Tennant the best, but it is mostly based on the actor you start with I believe.

I can agree with that, and the Tom Baker years may have been a bit campy, but I just think it adds to the appeal.

I'm looking forward to the demise of Matt Smith ... although I don't think we get that tonite, that doesn't happen until the Christmas special.
Downloaded a copy of Day of the Doctor ... loaded it up in my Plex server and after I get a few chores done the Mrs and I will settle in to watch it ... we're both having pretty severe Dr Who DTs (and frankly Tourchwood just isn't good enough to stave them off).

I agree, and being in my late 30's he was my first Doctor. His quirkiness and charm made him a fun Doctor Who, which is the same reason a lot people like David Tennant so much, well that and his overflowing energy.

I will admit, I do like the new doctor, and I credit that to the enjoyment I derived from watching TB's portrayal of the doctor.
I guess that cemented my following of the show.
I would also recommend Red Dwarf. Not similar to Dr Who, really, but decent English humor, based in space.

Thank God Dish timers are smarter than I am, even if they don't know when a show actually ends.
I'm embarrassed that I didn't even see this coming.

Got hooked on all the Brit comedy stuff, The Young Ones, Benny Hill, Are You Being Served? etc. when I was in Germany in the early 80's because we got BFBS instead of AFN. That lead to a general following and watching Red Dwarf when it ran in later years.

Just watched the Commercial free Day of the Doctor. (Yeah DVR) and there's one guy who kind of looks like Lister in it.
SPOILER ALERT: SO where does Clara fit in, come the 13th Dr. ?
So anyone have an answer to the question in the very first post?

See first sentence in reply #4.
I don't see the answer. Is the song in the Google home screen game from the original or the new version? To be more specific, I mean the tune when it shows the phone booth spinning around, so you'll have to beat the first level of the Google game to see what I'm talking about.

You noobs.
.
Highly doubt it.
Also, the very first one I saw on Netflix just randomly starts out with some Aztecs, with zero introduction as to who any of the cast are, or any of the premise of the show at all. Is that the first episode?

They have that tree at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki.
I think Eccleston did a good job. Baker was the Dr when I first watched it in the 70's. The show is all about the writers. Moffat has been good for the show but Russel Davies really gets the credit for reviving the show and making it the hit that it has become over the past eight years.

Steven Moffat is a good writer, but he doesn't have the same dedication to structure, order and continuity that Davies had ... and for a show about time travel you really have to be careful not to let things get too messy. This last season with Matt Smith as The Doctor and with Moffat as Executive Producer and Davies gone has gone pretty messy.
Moffat wrote what I think is hands down the best Dr Who episode (and probably the best single episode of TV Sci Fi ever) Blink (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Blink_%28TV_story%29), but Davies was still at the helm then and kept Moffat on track.
After this episode, we'll see what direction the show goes in now ... I think it'll be nice to see them cool off a bit and stop having every other episode be "The Doctor Saves All of Space-Time" and this new quest (not saying what it is for the sake of not dropping a spoiler) might just help keep them focused. Also the Christmas Episode will be Matt Smith's last episode so we'll be done with the ADHD dork as Dr.

i agree with blink. However the weeping angels carried over to Amy & Rory's last showing with matt. While not everyone's cup o tea, we like[ed] his take on the Dr. 400 years is a long time to carry the burden of the universe.
Okay, so I looked it up on Wikipedia for a full list of episodes and found out why this seems so confusing with watching Netflix. Apparently Netflix only has one "serial" from each season. So "Season 1" on Netflix is only The Aztecs serial from season one, which is the sixth serial. "Season 2" on Netflix is The Mind Robber, which is like the fourth serial of season 2. What Netflix has seems to be some sort of sampler. There are only 75 episodes from the original, but apparently something like 297 were made.
The reboot in 2005 brings Dr Who to a different level, both in writing, acting, and production values. Watching the last three Doctors compared to Baker or Pertwee is like comparing Star Trek The Next Generation to TOS. I like both and they each have an interesting take on their universe. Just because the show has been around for 50 years doesn't mean that the current show has much in common with the original show.
I just finished watching yesterday's episode. It was OK, but I am more than ready to move along from the Tennant/Smith years. I hope Capaldi brings a different flavor to the character and I hope the writers can find some interesting things to work into the episodes. The story arch running throughout the seasons keeps the show going even when there are a few weak episodes.
I have to admit that I get a chuckle out of any episode featuring UNIT. I assume that one day the Chinese will look at us and wonder why we look longingly upon our past glory.

Harriet Jones, MP Flydale North.
This reminds me of a story. I was drunk in a bar. I heard these two great big fat ladies talking at the bar, and they sounded like they were from Scotland. So I go over and say (drunkenly), "excuse me, are you two ladies from Scotland?" One of them gets all mad slaps me and grunts, "Wales." A bit shocked I ask again, "excuse me, Are you two Whales from Scotland"

It was rubbish. It was ,along with the last 3 episodes, like listening to a kid with ADD reading a choose your own adventure book. That said, I'm looking forward to Capaldi being the new doctor. I'm not looking forward to Moffat continuing to run the show.

It was interesting and cleared up the 10th doctor gap. We'll give it a viewing and see where it goes. The silence / crack in time-dimension was different

Agreed on all counts. I've been patiently waiting for Matt Smith's time to come to an end. I do wish Russel T Davis would come back and run the show though ... keep Moffat as a writer, but not put him in charge (side note, Moffat's writing on Sherlock has been stellar).
