So I have several rifles, different calibers, different scopes. I really don't have a purpose in any particular weapon, I just shoot for fun.

I just purchased a Bushnell AR223, 3-12x40mm (reasonable $ at a pawn shop) I'm not sure what to use it on or which scope to replace with it.

Below are my list/choices of existing scoped items to put the 3-12x40 on.

Well, I guess my table didn't work out... so here is the data.

AR15 A2, 223, 4x shotgun scope on handle. **
Savage Edge, 308, 3-9x40 Nikon Prostaff BDC
Ruger 1022, 22, 4x Tasco
Ruger SR22R, 22, Tasco Red Dot
Ruger 77/22, 22mag, Bushnell 3-9x32

** I might purchase another 1-4x Bushnell for the AR since I have a line on one of those cheap too.

I really don't shoot any gun more than another. Probably the least shot is the 22 Mag.

Ideas on what to move where and get rid of an optic.

I have no use for red dots except for training rifles for new shooters. I'd replace that.

I bought the red dot out of curiosity and it's ok, and put it on the SR hoping the kids would like to mess around with it. Maybe I could put that on one of my airguns and see how it works there.

Put the 3-12 on the SR22 or which other rifle? I like the nikon on the 308, it appears to be a good scope. The new bushnell seems great too, and I'll mess around with it more tomorrow during the daylight hours.

I'll play devils advocate here...

Maybe you need to buy a new rifle to put under that scope.

Well, that is always an option, if I wanted to spend the money. I don't go shooting enough to justify what I already own. haha

I was looking around at the 17 hornady in the savage bolt action. I thought that would be fun to play with and reload.

Gets my vote...

All my ARs have red dots, but recently I bought a 1-4. I had one with a 3-9 and didn't enjoy shooting it as much as the ones with the red dots. Again I wasn't shooting anything over 100-200 yrds with them anyway.

I like red dots, and have them on both of my ARs. I admit they make me a bit lazy, but for the distance they are zeroed, nothing helps me shoot faster or more accurately. I would consider replacing one with an ACOG if I ever acquired one, but in the interim, the red dots will do.

Have you tried focusing the scope on anything at distances? Knowing what the glass is capable of would help in deciding where it should go.

I still like shooting open sights, but distance, size, and movement are all getting harder for me to pick up as I get older. Money can only compensate so much for age.

I haven't messed with the new 3-12 scope much yet, it was dusk when I picked it up from the pawnshop.

I'll see if I can get the other bushnell 1-4 tomorrow cheaply. If so, I'll stick that on the AR and try to figure out the left over options. Trying to get better scopes for everything, yet not waste a good one on some crappy gun. :) I know, upgrade the guns. Someday.

Browsing the internet, I've seen a few places with Nikons on clearance/sale. P-223 and M-223 models. I don't own either, but was considering the M-308 for a while and I still might get one.

Well, I just picked up the other AR223 scope - 1-4x24 ($75) and I'll try to stick it on top of the AR carry handle. See how it looks up there.

This 1-4x24 sure is nice too, for the money. I'm just used to crappy scopes. haha

Jim - I'll see about putting the 3-12 on the ruger and it should look cool. I had one of the bushnells on there previously and it worked and looked good, this one should be an improvement.

Just to show an update, Ruger SR22 with 3-12, AR with 1-4.

That looks just like mine. I think its made for the .223 ballistics. It looks pretty good on the top carry handle. I think it will look alright on a flat top like mine. However, I'm still waiting for the my parts but they won't come until next week and I'm not on vacation then. So I don't know when I will be able to show it off, because I don't know when I will be able to put it together. But your picture is nice and inspirational.

Atop the carry handle on an AR is not a good place to put an optic.

What's your Zero? What's your JAW weld like?

Unfortunately I don't own a flat top AR, and cutting the handle off the A2 just doesn't seem right. :) I've had a scope on the carry handle previous to this newer one, and liked shooting it.

I'll probably just zero at 100 yards. I previously shot @ 200 yards and was ringing the gong every time. If I can shoot that far reliably, I'm happy. Just a Zombie Gun anyways.

Cheek Weld is good for me, might not be for others. I'll get it to the range and see what happens.

I have had good and bad experiences with red dots. A guy at the range let me shoot his AR with an EOtech on it and not only did I shoot better my GF was hitting the bullseye with every shot. And the other time I bought a red dot for my GSG 22 and could never get the stupid thing zeroed and it eventually died on me. Your mileage may vary.
