View Full Version : Paul Walker dead following car accident
http://www.tmz.com/2013/11/30/paul-walker-dead-dies-car-accident-fatal-fire-crash/
Paul Walker -- best known for his role in "The Fast and the Furious" movies -- died Saturday afternoon after a single-car accident and explosion in Southern California ... TMZ has learned.
The accident happened in Santa Clarita -- north of Los Angeles -- and according to multiple sources connected to Paul ... the actor was in a Porsche when the driver somehow lost control and slammed into a post or a tree ... and then the car burst into flames.
Crazy! Wonder what also played into the factor?

Ironic way to go out.
He was a 2A proponent as well.
I would classify him as a "B" movie actor but from everything I ever heard about him he was a decent guy.

She had apparently just moved to Los Angeles from Hawaii so she could be closer to him.
So is the media blaming this on the Porsche or the light pole?
In 2012, 33,561 people were killed in traffic accidents in the US. That is about 2800 people every month or 95 people every day.

One of my all time favorite films. Anyone that says the guy couldn't act either:
A: Hasn't seen that film.
B: Has their head in their ass.
C: Thinks they can do better (see B.).
I saw Running Scared, but don't remember any of it. Isn't there a pimp in there some where?
Very sad, I enjoyed his movies. RIP
He was in the process of helping out the Philippines taking people on test drives.... How sad for his family! Growing up without a father is going to be hard.

Sounds like the Porsche honestly, By the tone of the writing in every article I've seen on it, it's like it was some magical phenomenon where the car just flew off the road all by itself. I mentions nothing of high speed driving or reckless actions by the guy behind the wheel.
Remember, Nothing could possibly be the fault of the person.

Sounds to me like they're pinning this on the driver. But I would really appreciate if we could not turn this into a political circle jerk.

Good that they're admitting it finallly, every single one I saw last night said things like this, as if the car magically was in control at some point.
According to witnesses, the red Porsche Carrera GT carrying Walker and his friend lost control and slammed into a tree and then a light pole.
He was reportedly a passenger in the Porsche at the time of the crash.
I think he'd be alive if he was driving... They got a lot of training in driving to make the Fast And Furious movies. So sad, I liked Paul Walker. Like Jhood said, anyone who says he can't act has their head in their 4th point of contact- he saved the silly script that was Joy Ride.

It would seem obvious that a car by itself wouldn't just run into something solid, there's always that human element. The driver, Roger Rodas, I'd imagine was no slouch behind the wheel being that he was a SCCA World Challenge competitor. I've heard of other Carrera GTs killing their drivers, apparently it's a lot of car to handle. Either way, It's sad to see someone with as much potential as Paul Walker just pass away like that. From what I gathered, Paul was an avid shooter, big car enthusiast, and his morals seemed to be the right place. Which I think is rare in the acting world, and his movies were entertaining to say the least. R.I.P.

Face it, in just about every part of our daily lives politics plays a role. (unless one lives in a fantasy world[mlp])

Man, what's with all the cynicism? While I wasn't a particular fan of the F&F franchise, they were well done with high production values and hardly the kind of societal decay and filth that Hollywood often puts out. From what I can see, he was honestly and sincerely trying to do some good rather than the typical self-serving PSAs and other crap that so many in Hollywood engage in.
For his sake, I hope he was killed on impact. The ensuing fire is a horrible way for anyone to go.

The Porsche Carrera GT was an awesome vehicle. When the vehicle will go from sitting still to 60mph in 3.5-3.9 seconds (depending on whose website you're reading), it doesn't take long to find yourself in deep trouble. This car has one of the best exhaust notes I've ever heard.
http://youtu.be/vE_WqdKbTvY
Previous owner of car in Paul Walker crash was IndyCar driver Graham Rahal (http://www.autoweek.com/article/20131201/carnews/131209996#ixzz2mILJCVdy)
"I get bored with cars pretty quickly," he said in a story published earlier this year. "The Carrera GT is just harder to drive, and I drive my cars a lot. Nothing that I have will not be used. Every car that I have will be driven a lot. I have two cars that are old that don't get used that often, but that is rare."
Rahal compared the Carrera GT to a 2010 Ferrari 599 GTO. Some of his observations and his descriptions of how difficult the Carrera was to drive are chilling in light of the crash.
"It says it has traction control, but that traction control on that car is not going to do a thing to save you," Rahal said. "And that's what I love about it. Part of me is very happy about it and part of me regrets it. It was a great, great car.
...but probably not quite as much as the professional driver that was behind the wheel when they went one-on-one with a telephone pole.
This I did not know... but it may have been an overconfidence issue...? I know some pros who are extremely confident, a little too confident. It's only a matter of time before that attitude gets them into trouble. But I won't make any assumptions on the deceased driver's abilities. I'll only state that it's sad and unfortunate.

I'll say what I told a friend yesterday about this very thing:
I'm kinda tired of the passive aggressive attitude people take when people mourn the passing of a beloved celebrity and there's always someone to step in and first get upset about "no one pays attention to the troops who died in the meantime" or something similar, and second are actually surprised at the celebrity worship in our society. I get more offended not when people ignore the deaths of my brothers and sisters in combat, but when people use them to lambaste the celebrity obsession in America. I find it difficult to believe anyone not directly affected by a service members death actually pay attention, or much less shed a single tear. I get broken up whenever I hear about it, but can't honestly say I actually pay attention to every military death that happens. As a veteran, I appreciate the sentiment, but only if/when it's actually genuine. Otherwise, please, spare me the false anger. (Not directed at you Mtn Man, just in general, people who say things like that rarely ever really mean it).

Now the rumor is that they lost power steering which caused the accident.
That sounds like a boatload of speculation. How would one already know that they lost power steering?
Going way too fast in an area not safe for that speed is the most likely cause and can be supported by the level of destruction of the vehicle. The car was almost broken in half.

The theory is based off a considerable amount of PS fluid being in the street, which, honestly, could be as a result of the accident itself.
There are parts all over the street. The final resting place of the car is just that. The concrete and re-bar light standard was likely where the wreck became fatal. In one of the videos a woman explains that the car was "in half" and there was still someone in the car.

Parts of the car were magnesium alloy and would be difficult to extinguish once ignited.

You are correct sir, the kiddo spouted them off and it is in fact the rogue choo-choo of the Bronx's speed, eerily similar to the derail in Spain.

Tragic loss. Both of those guys were experienced drivers with a lot of racing experience. That might have led to their overconfidence, especially on a street that they were very familiar with. It's been said in this thread and in others that the CGT is a hard car to control, it's also a hard car to get killed in due to its carbon fiber tub. In order to crack that in half, you need to be absolutely cruising and hit something totally immovable.
Yup they're saying fluids on the roads before the skid marks.

The story as I heard it was that the Porsche was in their shop for repair, and the tech's couldn't exactly figure it out and get it started and diagnose the problem. So the driver took the keys, and Walker (having a partial stake in the company) wanted to tag along. The car wasn't 100% perfect, and so the story that there were fluids on the street prior to the skid marks doesn't sound too far fetched. Maybe they were being reckless, maybe they weren't, I'm not sure. But the car wasn't in perfect working order prior to driving it.
Accident investigation is a pretty neat thing, they can determine the first harmful incident within a few hours into the investigation. I'm pretty sure by now they know the proximate cause of the accident. I'm sure the details will be released to the public pretty soon considering the high profile of the deceased.

No amount of fluid on the street, mechanical woes, or other issues will cause a car, any car, to end up like that Porsche ended up....if driving at normal speeds. At the posted 45mph limit that street had, you could drive that car into a concrete wall and live through it.

That seems unlikely, since they were leaving a car show and had given multiple people rides in the car prior to the crash.

You're right. They were coming from a show put on by their shop. But the car was acting up which is why they were in it. Rodas saw one of his guys having trouble with it and Walker hopped in and they took it out. I was wrong about it being in the shop for repair, misunderstood it when the wife told me. All of this is based off TMZ reports, so take that for what it's worth.

I just saw the scene on a report on TV, the speed limit was 35, not 45... Even at 35 you can still screw up enough in a high performance car and be killed. It happened on Sheridan a few years ago, 37 MPH, driver killed (I know the Lakewood traffic investigator who investigated the accident).

Regardless of what happened, Paul Walker did a lot of good things. He probably did more good things, just to do them than many of us on here twice his age. Yes he wasn't going very fast but also understand that his car did what it should have in that impact. The "tub" was still intact, the rear subframe snapped off it, but the tub remained in place. In order for you to crack a CF tub in half you need to be moving fast.
Wonder how fast he was going?

Clearly slightly below the speed of light.
MVA's are weird things. Cars do weird things on impact. I have seen low speed accidents where the vehicle was demolished and high speed ones where the vehicle was nearly driveable.
Physics.

It broke the same way, right in front of the "K member". The bodies were still in the "tub" and front half of the car. As for cracking any laminate, they are not strong torsionally.

Nah, it's suddenly becoming stationary that gets ya.
It's not the fall that kills. It's the sudden stop at the end.
And the ground has never missed a person falling yet.

Obviously another drone strike!

That is Obama care's vehicle. Paul Walker has seen the last of shit like that. And he died before becoming a typical Hollywood Dbag.

I think I got a little something in my eye after that one.
Still a shitty thing to happen to a decent actor. Or at least a great actor that played shitty rolls that I liked. Why couldn't it have been the queer pink mist guy from kick ass?

Real bum deal all around. He's just a year older than me, and my wife and I nearly met our maker last week. Going to Texarkana to see the mother in law, some idiot passed on a curve on a two lane road west of Sherman. Idiot got back over with less than 2 car lengths to spare in front of me. Told my wife, head on collision at 70+mph each, no one walks away from that.
What would people say about you after you move on?
I won't care because I won't hear it.
I hope someone says, "I'm glad he was all paid up on his life insurance."

Sounds like the poor bastard burned to death. What a hell of a way to go :(
http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2014/01/03/paul-walker-coroner-report/4306673/
The autopsy report concluded that the cause of the death was the "effect of traumatic and thermal injuries." It was ruled "an accident" by Lawrence Nguyen, deputy medical examiner.
The injuries to Walker in the passenger seat were horrific, as only remnants of the outfit he was wearing following a charity function he hosted were intact -- a black t-shirt, black jeans and grey boxer shorts. Walker was found "charred and in a pugilistic stance."
I stand by my earlier (since maligned) comment that you cannot turn a car into what they did at normal posted speeds:

pick a tree or telephone post and hit it at over 100mph and it ain't gonna be comfy.
Paul Walker car crash was caused by speed - not mechanical problems: investigators (http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/paul-walker-car-crash-caused-speed-investigators-article-1.1734446)
The Porsche carrying "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker was traveling approximately 90 mph when it lost control on a suburban street and crashed, killing the actor and his friend, according to an investigation by law enforcement agencies into the November accident.
The sports car slammed into a light pole which had a speed limit sign of 45 mph, killing Walker and Roger Rodas in a fiery wreck.
Investigators concluded that unsafe driving, not mechanical problems, caused the crash, according to a person who has reviewed a report by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol. Investigators calculated that Rodas was driving between 81 mph and 94 mph when his 2005 Porsche Carrera GT began to drift as it lost control after coming out of a curve.
"The vehicle had no mechanical failure and the damage that occurred to the vehicle was from the collision," accident reconstruction specialists with the Highway Patrol wrote, according to the person, who requested anonymity because the report has not been officially released yet.
The post-crash investigators also noted that the tires were 9 years old. The manual suggested changing the tires after 4 years.

With a car like that, you don't need NOS. The rumor was unfounded.
Heard today he was doing 90mph when the unpleasantness started.
