View Full Version : Winter time hobbies?
Just wondering what other hobbies you guys do during the cold winter weather? I like building RC cars, yep, I know sounds immature, but really a lot of fun.

I buy a cheap, older (1978-1985) Honda CB bike and fix it in december - Jan. Then sell it in March.

My biggest hobby during the winter time, is just trying to stay warm.
I tie a lot of flies for spring/summer fishing. I tie my fall/winter flies during the summer.
I chase the wife around the bedroom. It's good exercise. Sometimes I even catch her.

You either have a huge bedroom, or you do a bunch of laps around in a small one. Sometimes you catch her?... you must have spent some time at the new bar.

When I'm not chasing the wife around the bedroom, I like to put together AR style rifles.

^^^ I wish I had that hobby. Looks like serious fun
RC cars would be fun, I used to have a big, unfinished N scale model railroad but I had to choose between the RR and reloading. I'm very pleased with the choice I made.
Read even more books than normal, reload, play outside in the cold, wish that spring would hurry the hell up and get here already.

No kidding haven't done any of that for almost 15 years now. Anyone ever seen the Timbersled Mountain Horse snow bike kits? These look like a blast too!

Yeap, did a demo ride on them last year up at Rabbit ears and they're an absolute blast, If I had the cash I'd have a kit on my dirt bike but when you consider a new $9k bike (you definitely want EFI and a BIG motor) plus the $7K snowbike kit. They're just flat out expensive and for me at least can't completely replace my sled.
They even built a turbo kit for them now too.

The Axials are great rigs, I've had or currently have every single rig they've made since the very first ones. The new JK Jeeps are a blast if you are wanting a 1.9, and you cannot go wrong with a Wraith if you want a 2.2. I'd have to say the poison spyder wraith is about my favorite one out right now.

Wait, you guys stop shooting during the winter?! [Shock]
Shooting is a year round hobby for me.
Snowboarding, watching football/movies, shooting, building AR's, driving sideways in my car, chasing the wife around the house (I don't limit it to the bedroom like some earlier posts)... anything else that strikes my fancy and time/money allows.

Winter is why I paid the bucks for access to an indoor range. A lot of days in December and January are still nice enough to go shooting at the outdoor range too.

I have a wraith and it is a blast. I crawl with it so I put in a different motor (hh35t). Tons of aftermarket support for the wraith. Can upgrade as far as your wallet will let you. Stock out of the box is perfect for starting out and upgrade as you feel the need or your driving style dictates. It's currently my favorite to play with out of the numerous other rc cars and trucks I own.
Great support from the crew at The Crawlspace in Arvada. I can't walk into that place without spending money.
you should try catching her sometime. we have 4 kids born in September.
haha nice work man. I'll try to catch her by surprise when I get home tonight. It's supposed to be cold the next few days!

Making certain the recliner is kept in use and thinking of what I will have for Spring projects.
December is usually focused on Elk hunting. January on building (rebuilding) my personal guns for the next season, February loading ammo. March, I start shooting matches again.
I'll try to get some waterfowl and pheasant hunting in there sometime. I also usually have a few hundred pounds of hamburger to grind as well as sausage to make. I might tinker with the truck or the GTO if I get ahead of the game, but that is rare.
coyote calling about 10 days/month. Can't get enough of it.
I hibernate. Come to think of it, I'm getting sleepy just thinking about winter.

I will get more reloading done than I did over the summer. I also have a Marshall stack in the basement that I haven't plugged in since I moved into this house about a year and a half ago that has been calling my name...

Skinny skiing and going to bullfights on acid.
Reloading, making kydex holsters, play a little Xbox, sip on a little whiskey, get some range time, but most of all, spend as much time with my 4 year-old as possible. He's my best friend in the whole world.

That is Awesome!!! Skijoring with a motorcycle
Yeah, that's pretty manly of a hobby. Kind of reminds me one summer many years ago, my best friend and I were sitting around, bored out of our minds. He says, "Hey, I got an idea" and runs off behind his dad's garage. He comes back with this old Kent Feeds sign and a long piece of rope. I said, "What the heck you gonna do with that?" So he proceeds to cut a small square hole near one end of the sign, ties the rope through it and attaches the other end to the rear of my 4-wheeler. He runs in the house, comes back out with a pair of winter cover-alls on. Now mind you, this is 85-90 degree weather in the dead summer of Iowa. He tells me to get on the four wheeler and pull him around the yard. We both had our turns on that sheet metal sign. It's truly a great wonder we didn't break any bones or kill ourselves. Country boys can survive...and damn did we have fun!
After big game hunting season my winter time is focused on home improvement fixup projects, a little reloading, cross-country skiing, pruning fruit trees and catching up on the beer and wine making projects. Today I'm racking and bottling a few carboys....
