Hey guys quick question for you, can you hunt in Colorado with a Ar-15? Mine is a 5.56. If so what can you hunt? Primarily wondering about deer?

Here are the regs from the Colorado Division of wildlife website.

Rifles using center fire cartridges of .24 caliber or larger, having expanding bullets of at least seventy (70) grains in weight, except for elk and moose where the minimum bullet weight is eighty-five (85) grains, and with a rated impact energy one hundred (100) yards from the muzzle of at least one thousand (1000) foot pounds as determined by the manufacturer's rating providing that any semiautomatic rifle used shall not hold more than six (6) rounds in the magazine and chamber combined. A fully automatic rifle is prohibited.

So 5.56 is not legal for big game. You can shoot coyotes and other small game.

I recommend checking out the website or go to a sporting goods store and pick up a copy of the regulations.

thanks, figured as much, although a 5.56 nato can be just as deadly at 100 yards as a 308, my .02

The 5.56 can be deadly, sure. Unfortunately, those are the regs.

I can see it now. Full tactical gear, camo face paint, Jimmy Lyle "Rambo" knive between the teeth, and an AR-15 strapped over the shoulder as you drag an elk back to camp. That'd be a funny picture.

Problem is that you'd have a heck of a time convincing DOW that they (elk) drew first blood!

All you have to do is yell "IT COMING RIGHT AT ME" and then shoot away. I saw it on south park so I know its true. :)

There are a lot of hunting forums where the AR platform is the preferred weapon... just not usually in 223/5.56. AR's in 5.56 are the preferred weapon for predators/varmints though.
