TheBlaze has detailed (http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/11/27/the-gun-confiscation-notice-nyc-resident-reportedly-received-will-likely-send-chills-down-your-spine/) the New York City Police Department’s effort to eliminate shotguns and rifles with capacities of more than a five rounds, saying such firearms must be handed over, modified or carted outside city limits:

Now Fox News reports (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/12/05/nypd-targets-owners-multi-clip-shotguns-rifles/?cmpid=cmty_twitter_fn) that gun-rights advocates, as well as one New York state elected official, are angry over the notices, saying that the city is aiming badly with them.
“A gun collector who never fired a gun in his life, but has a few antiques might have to get them altered,” Tom King, president of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, told Fox. “These are not the people law enforcement should be targeting.”
“We think it’s an abuse of power by the NYPD,” he said. His organization spent $400,000 on a lawsuit challenging the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act which was signed in January by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
More from Fox News:
The SAFE Act was the first law in the nation prompted by the December 2012 killing of 20 first-graders and six educators in Newtown, Conn. Its passage was seen as a victory for gun-control advocates because it expands a ban on military-style weapons, requires mental health professionals to report threats, limits magazines to seven bullets, taxes bullets and creates a registry.
New York State Assemblyman James Tedisco (R) voted against the SAFE Act and told Fox News that New York City had the five-round law in the books for about 20 years — but this marks the first time he’s heard complaints about the notices being sent out to gun owners.
“These letters appear to be another example of the nanny state,” Tedisco told Fox. “Hypothetically, it can start with a letter, and then that can lead to someone knocking on your door saying, ‘I want to see your gun.’”

Not so far fetched. A couple of years ago none of us thought our State legislators would ban standard capacity magazines, and look at us now.
Shall we summarize this?
They are breaking the law. They probably do not agree with the law but they are breaking it. NY, since there is a registry, can enforce this law and is choosing to. There are very few options once you receive that letter because the people sending it are the only ones with the legal use of force backing them up. They can and will screw you over if you do not comply.
I find it interesting that NY jumped straight to enforcing the "Collect the bad guns" instead of the way CA did it with "Get gun from illegal owners." Perhaps because there was so long with restricted access the only people on the registry any more are legit owners of now illegal guns. This enforcement action will do much more to convince people against registries than what CA is doing; collecting .22 bolt rifles becasue they hold 6 shells is unlikely to garner as much sympathy as collecting .45 handguns from people under restraining orders.

It's a dup thread. It still stinks, however! I don't miss NY State...

You'd be seeing it from the barrel end at my door.
Good thing we got the 3 stooges out, imagine if they still had their seats and more of Bloombergs money?
It still can happen here if we let our guard down.
Just assinine. What will it take for people to stand up to this and change their voting habits

NYC has been a pit for the last century and New York state has been shite since at least 2000 when they voted to make Hillary Clinton a US Senator. Anyone who lives there deserves what they get. Anyone who voted for Cuomo or diBlasio deserves what they get.

Yea! You gotta be a law abiding citizen!
Law is the Law. wooohooo !!!
Damn Criminals giving the rest of us a bad name!
PS. Before you cop haters show up, even though the cops are demanding people turn in their guns, its not their fault, they fully support the 2nd A, they have no choice, they are just following orders

Follow the law or pay the consequences, got another option? There is a huge laundry list of BS laws and you follow them or get screwed. (In many cases it comes down to which way you get screwed)
Really Low, what would you do with that letter in your mail? They know you own the gun, they can send a cop to pick you up at work quite safely. Your options are limited, which one do you choose?
It still can happen here
sad, but true

If you all want to comply with this shit, and want to give those who carry this kind of stuff out a pass; well feel free. That is certainly a way. It is also a reason why they think they can get away with it. They count on people to be a good little Law Abiding Citizen; a demonstrable Lie - as you are all, including me, guilty of something some of us ZOMG felonies just by living - its impossible not to be.
Some say those three words as some sort of talisman. Its like religion. They Holy Book of the Government Must.Be.Obeyed. No manner of things are unjust if its written in the Holy Book of the Government. Why? Im a Law Abiding Citizen. You gotta follow the Law. Rules are Rules. I don't want to live in Somalia.
Of course they don't realize that once they do, they have already ceded the argument - they will do anything that is the Law. Report the hypothetical Jews in the attic? Well i don't agree with it, but im a Law Abiding Citizen, and don't want to be a Criminal so i have to drop a dime - Its the Law.
Please. Its a failure of an argument. Its just excuses really. And it ultimately leads you to the loss of everything.
Shit. How many here would call the ATF if they see someone at the range with a rifle barrel under 16 inches. How many would ask to see the guys papers? I bet some would. So why is that? Im a Law Abiding Citizen. You gotta follow the Law. You give us a bad name, oh and one of the best: Its a Big Boy Game (tm). Its an absurd law, but i bet some of you would vote to convict a guy with a 15.9 inch barrel without a stamp because the Law is the Law and He.Broke.The.Law
So long as its the Law, some of will grin and bear it and turn in your guns, and give the people who enforce this type of garbage a complete pass because they are Just Doing Their Job/Just Following Orders (tm). Then we can celebrate pictures like this in the USA
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WFDTwOc2vps/TzQ8-uZaBNI/AAAAAAAAAL8/wYtXJT7LK_A/s1600/Gun%2BDestruction.jpg
Why? Its the LAW. Im a Law Abiding Citizen. You gotta follow the Law.
Do you really think the first step is going to be door to door Swat raids. No of course not. Its much easier for the cops to send official letter demanding your guns or else. Hell, do is slowly and staggered and people will just call bullshit on it! They would never do that! Need more info! Photoshopped ! That guy looks like a Douche. Fuck him ! All the cops that i know said they would quit if told to do that - so its a Fake!
Its much easier to declare subsets of people ineligible to have guns. People with PSTD. The "mentally ill". The Domestic Terrorists. People in a no fly list. People on the Secret Government list of Bad - Trust Us they are Bad! - People(tm) . People with a 16 round magazine. Each step of the way, each new law, has its own constituency, its own cheerleaders.
Why Of Course its just Common Sense that the crazy people should not have guns. And of course no tea bagging, nra member, domestic terrorist should have guns either. No one needs a more than a 5, 10, 15 round magazine, they are banned. If you have one, no guns for you. No one needs a high powered assault sniper scope. Caught with anything more then a 2X, no guns for you. Turn them in. Its the Law. For public safety you may not store more then 20 rounds of ammo, or 5 oz of black powder in a home. Excess amounts may be stored at government approved facilities. Don't comply No guns for you. Guns/ammo with muzzle energy greater then N are banned. Turn them in. Its the Law.
On and on an on.
Then you move on up the penalty escalation ladder. At each rung, you will get more and more people complying. At each rung you can count on the jealousies increasing. ie) Well I complied with the law, so that guy over there needs to as well. Law is the Law. Fuck that Guy. *ring ring*.. Hello Gun hotline, how may I help you? .... I know this guy with an arsenal....
Hell some people think you should lose your 2nd A rights and not be able to buy an gun, if you fail to pay a traffic ticket that results in your bench warrant. Because its the Law. My My My - Just look how the bar has been successfully lowered. Don't pay your traffic fine, No Guns For you. That 2nd A is some strongly held principle - no doubt. heh
More importantly - See how easy that was?
As for what i do if i get a letter...Im certainly not going to cooperate/comply with the cops who voluntarily choose to confiscate guns under the color of law - for money. If you, or others wish to, well have at it. *shrug* Everyone must make their own choice.
Currently there are several steps you can take. From complying, to moving, to dying trying to fight a pitched battle against a superior force at your front door. Will all of those options be available forever? Probably not. Just remember as the window inexorably closes smaller and smaller so do your choices. So better make it a good one...
I do, however, have no doubt that if someone in NYC or elsewhere takes the: fight a pitched battle at the front door and lights up the cops, they will be almost universally condemned as a douchey cop killing bastard criminal who broke the law - and the cop(s) will be declared a hero who was just doing his job trying to go home safe that night, but some criminal jack ass took his life while he was performing his DUTY, trying to enforce the Law and keep you Safe.
Its almost like a predetermined script that is followed. Nah. That would be crazy.....
Most interesting to me though... Yes indeed. Most interesting.

You don't gotta follow the law but you do have to realize there will be consequences. Weigh those consequences in your decisions. As this is a public forum I personally am going to be very careful in my statements.

Yes this is an incremental approach, like boiling a frog. Go with what works. The folks saying "repeal the 2nd" (that actually know what they are saying) are still the fringe minority. Give it a few more increments and they will seem less wacko.
Personally, how this letter would affect me, it would fall somewhere on the following list. (increasing levels of consequences)
Are guns important enough to influence Voting? Yes
Are guns important enough to donate money in their defense? Yes
important enough to donate time? Yes (The money and time are reversed for some, depends what you have more of)
Important enough to influence where I move to? yes
To influence when I move away form somewhere? As an influence yes, as a prime motivator probably, have not hit that extreme need yet. Easier decision when it was just me.
To make me become a test case of violation for the courts to decide? Unlikely, only after careful research and preparation.
Molon Labe? Sorry, no.
We get the main chance to influence the laws we get by the people we elect. Once that option is lost by becoming a tiny minority we have the courts. Once that is lost we comply and accept the loss or defy the law accept those consequences.
At this point there is still the option of escaping some of the laws by moving so that is the other option.
