View Full Version : Powder questions?
I keep reading different things on the internet so figured I would ask here.
Does a faster burning powder equal a hotter burning powder?
Assuming all other variables are the same will a ball powder burn faster then a extruded powder or flake for that matter?
Thanks

Fast powders will burn "hotter" than slow powders given the same mass of propellant, regardless of shape. Or so say the multiple reloading web sites consensus .
Which of course may be proven wrong, or tweaked for correction by those much more in the know then i am.

As far as ball, extruded or flake is concerned I would think that it would be chemical composition that would dictate speed of burn. Especially considering there are extruded magnum handgun powders as well as flake rifle powders.
I think there are many factors, loading density and pressure would change a burning rate/heat.
Burn speed differences between powders are not related to actual burn temperature differences. However PV=nRT.

Not sure what the OP is actually interested in. Burning temperature for what? Worried about powder erosion? That's more of a composition than temperature artifact.
