Hey everyone,
I will be leaving for vacation soon and wanted to hear what you suggested I take to be somewhat prepared. Unfortunately I wont be in the US (going to Jamaica) so I wont be able to take a firearm. What do you suggest I take?

Thanks!

You can buy knives and stuff cheap out there if you want other then that I would bring some kind of water purification bottle I have family out there out in Tivoli gardens Kingston it can get a little hairy....last time I went out we went to hellshir beach for fish and festival(best thing ever) anyway we were drinking on the roof of this little bar and my bil told me to check something out two guys were arguing about something the one guy had a machete for cutting coconuts the other guy all of a sudden picks up a Heineken bottle and starts beating himself in the head with until it was totally broken to bits there was blood everywhere so the guy wanders off just pouring blood the other guy went back to cutting coconuts and the police never showed up wild stuff out there on the resort's I'm told it's a whole different story

See if the local PD does security / drive be checks on your residence. Do you have someone within the neighborhood to manage your place, lights on timers, mail service on hold, papers out front picked up.?

Bleeding kit.
Scripts and spare glasses as applicable
Tac light headlamp and batteries
multi tool.
Water treatment stuff
Rain gear. Like a snowboarding coat waterproof outer removable inner jacket
Emergency cash.
Spare socks and good boots.
Leather palmed gloves. Mechanic or work.

I would take silver or gold coins for barter. If I was abroad, I would take more than I usually do.

I have this: http://www.specialforces.com/rigger-s-sere-belt
37931
It is a part of my EDC. I typically have some 90% silver coins and a couple quarter eagles in it at all times. Just in case I am in a bind I can hopefully barter my way to more favorable conditions.

I would probably carry the silver coins in a manner that it looks like regular change, and put them in the belt after you are out of the airport because that would look like you are smuggling something. LOL

I also carry a thumb drive with a scan of ALL my Vital documents... DL, birth cert, marriage cert divorce decree, in this belt. It might help in identification if you find yourself suddenly without a wallet.

Advil
sunscreen
mosquito repellent
waterproof band-aids
tweezers / fingernail clipper
sun glasses
money belt
Xerox copies of passport, plane ticket
secondary credit card

-and leave the flashy jewelry at home that every American tourist seems absolutely compelled to wear in third world countries!

Medicine is the biggest. Anytime I travel out of country, I bring all the meds I can.

Where did you get it? I'm interested.

In addition to what Wulf202 and Hatidua wrote:

I also add about 8’ of duct tape rolled around a pen, some para cord, heavy fishing line (mostly for a clothes line). In my first aid kit I carry: pills for stomach problems, different OTC pain meds, Benadryl. I also have itch, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal creams. (creams, because ointments are bad in places that rub). Prescription antibiotics for my wife and I. Usually Cipro because it is a good multi spectrum anti-biotic and it is very shelf stable.

My wife used to think I was crazy until my kit helped save the day on multiple occasions.

Use bug spray and use it often. We were in the Dominican Republic in September and a German man got lymphatic filariasis, bad stuff, from a mosquito bite. He was in the hospital and was really sick for several days. Most third world countries make you pay for the hospital in cash before they treat you. They don’t always have a ready supply of medications either.

Lessons learned every time.

Just like at home, don’t make yourself a target by getting trashed/drunk, breaking their laws (especially drug laws), acting a fool, being disrespectful, being an A&&#0!% or dressing like you have gobs of money. They already know you are much wealthier than they are, so don’t rub it in their faces.

These go a real long ways with ALL people: Be respectful, courteous, humble and remember you are a guest in THEIR country.

Have a safe trip and let us know what a great time you had when you get back.

Kman

I always travel with a cane from cane from cane masters. Great weapon with proper training. FAA friendly. Friendly world wide!

Just be cool and don't draw attention to yourself.

Even if she's really cute, don't go back to her hut. If you plan to partake in the local crop, bring plenty of cash, they do random road side searches. And don't buy it on the beach!

Predators watch their prey before they attack, they do not normally attack other predators if there is easier prey.
Develop the attitude and behavior of a predator, not an aggressive attitude but a confident one. Situational awareness is key.
Stay sober and stay out of dark alleys.

Traveled all over Asia without incident while friends got mugged sometimes just blocks away.
