View Full Version : Need Ideas for Garage Scrap Wood/Metal Storage
Howdy fellas! I'm interested to see how you DIYers store your scrap metal and wood for future projects.
I want to build something that wuill help organize my stuff. Right now the scrap wood is on saw horses taking up lots of room, and the metal is laying all over my next project.
Post your pics I'd like to see what works for you!
I can get you a pic of the pile outside but I'd need to clear the snow off the tarp

LOL! I do have to say having a pile outside the house is a no-go.

I use almost 80% of my 2 car garage open attic for leftover wood/trim/flooring etc.

I think I may do that for the wood, the metal is going to get a little heavy. The only open attic part of my garage is the third car part of the garage. May put the wood up there in the rafters.

The shed in the background is actually my project shop and has 2x4's with plywood running side to side (open in the middle)where the white trim is.
Keep all my excess materials there out of the way.

Store metal outside, in a nondescript shed, or along side the fence. Since you have a HellOA, is the scrap you have worth the headache storage wise, or easier to buy as needed.
BTW: What's a HOA?? [ROFL1]
I wish I could have a shed.

I am very interested. I have a bunch of wood in my attic, and am thinking about building some shelves up there to organize, along with some racks for the wood. I just picked up that extra wood from T-Giv and my wife is NOT happy about having the car outside all winter.

You keep cars in the garage?? garages are for items the spouse would bitch about, tripping over in the house, like a lathe and drill press.

I'm planning on building something shaped like this but longer and shorter for horizontal bar storage, its just low on the project list at the moment.

Since some of the walls in my garage are not yet drywall'd I put wood and metal between the studs and hold it in place with either bungees or wood blocks.

That sounds about right, I have a pile of wood and a pile of metal separated by a pile of motorcycles. Oh well, at least I know where everything is.

And "Hooker Pictures" as my wife describes them. :-D

:-D I don't have a whole lot. When I have a project, I tend to buy an extra 2x4 or two extra as habit, so really I usually only have a few pieces of plywood and a couple 2x4s or 4x4s. And a few short pieces. I definitely want something compact as even a 3 car garage gets cluttered, and I don't want to have an excuse to accumulate wood and metal scraps. Plus when I start my metal project, It will be handy to keep around the scrap instead of going to the metal scrapyard to get pieces.
I was thinking about doing something like what Colorado_Outback pictured above, but perhaps attach som heavy duty castors on it so it could move. It will for sure be shorter and a little bit wider.

I saw this at my uncle's house (in his garage) over Thanksgiving, and I was very intrigued for when I get my own house. Right now, I wouldn't do the work because we're renting.
It appears as though he installed a 12" wide piece of OSB, probably about 10'-12' long on the bottom with notches cut out, to sit in the trusses and just lean up against the ones that are angled forward toward the front of the garage which would be the top of the picture. Then he put in another, a couple more feet wide with notches cut out on the top side and it just rests on the 12" piece. I'm sure they are nailed down once in place. Them he's got OSB laying across the bottom trusses with notches cut out at the joints to form kind of a small storage room up there. Directly behind the garage door opener is a pull-down ladder. I don't remember right now if the other side is closed in too, or if it's open and just closed up in the front to block view from the front.
*maybe it's not OSB actually, looks like real wood. I dunno.

I'm good at conjuring up redneck solutions, but I'd have to see what you need to store and where.

Your hoa would have a coronary at my place. I even got to tell the city inspector to go away.
Sheetrock dolly on craigslist
Or go to home depot and get a cart with the 4 d shaped supports.

x2
Long thin stuff, make a rack on the wall
5' or less, smaller diameter, good trashcan works well, stuff in a corner
milk crate works for real small stuff
hard to access, hard to get things to and from, wont be used. IE, anything in an attic, anything requiring a ladder, pulleys etc. My experience anyway

I always chuckle and in a way am envious at Jim's setup... trucks/SUV on his nicely sodded lawn. New car out on the street, and man cave in his detached heated 3 car garage! God bless Jim!!!
I really like the heavy duty chrome wire shelving (http://www.samsclub.com/sams/seville-commercial-industrial-shelving-6-ct/152201.ip?origin=item_page.rr1&campaign=rr&sn=ClickCP&campaign_data=prod6710373) you can get at Sam's for storing just about everything. They're rated to hold 1200 lbs. and with the caster wheels you can easily move them around on the concrete garage floor. Can't beat them for strength, versatility and price. I've got more than a dozen of them in my garage, storage and winemaking rooms.
I'll take more pictures when I clean up a little bit, I have some electrical work going on.
I am leaning towards a rolling cart like stuff, as the wall on one side of the garage is covered. and some of the metal I have is piled on top of my next project.
38009
And on the right side I have cabinets.
38011
Which leaves me the center part of the three car garage as my work area.
I don't have a lot of lumber but I plan on acquiring more scrap metal once I start building the project. I just need a good place to store/organize it.
I was thinking I could build something like this guy did on you tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZtIEFa3Ofk&feature=share&list=PL2Y7G15DrVt7tgzyaDbciZ-rm6tmToHoF
but I am not sure it is suitable for metal. I also could just make something like that in metal instead of wood.

Its a 3 car shed, garages require building permits.

You obviously have never open or build anything in Windsor area... Even the zoning dept asks for Jim's permission to zone.
