View Full Version : Comparing Newtown to 'Affluenza'
Not to be insensitive to those who were killed by the 16 year old driving drunk. But I can't help but notice a huge inconsistency.
Was reading the comments on HuffPo about the Affluenza case that we've all heard of by now. I found that every comment I read essentially said this: This person's actions resulted in the deaths of many people, We need to hold this person accountable for his actions.
I'd like to juxtapose this with any old comments section about Newtown in which the comments generally read: This person's actions resulted in the death of many people. We need ban the device allegedly used, thus anyone else with a similar weapon accountable.
No one blamed the F-350 he was driving, everyone acknowledged that the weapon used, this time a vehicle, was not relative to the conversation. I understand most on Hufpo are hoplophobes, but how is it this logic is present when it's a car but not present when a firearm is used? maybe I answered my own question.
I refuse to post on HufPo, but if I did it would look like this.
"Just another example of why we need to ban large trucks. Who needs a truck that big? we should limit civilian ownership to f-150. M*V = F. maybe fewer people would have died if a vehicle not capable of such size, or speed for that matter."
Is this sort of a disgusting thing to interject into the conversation? is it ridiculous? yes and yes. So is suggesting we ban ar-15's and 30rd mags in the wake of any tragedy.
preaching to the choir I know.

Being one who has a degree in Philosophy, and a big part of it was logic, I can tell you one thing that is certain; humans and society seldom if ever base their actions on logic.

Okay, before you post your disgusting and ridiculous post on fluffpo, the product of mass and velocity is equal to momemtum, not force. Force is the product of mass and acceleration: F=m*a
So just change the "F" to a "P" and you're good! Newton (Sir Issac) would be most displeased with your comment on Newtown!

Yes, you are but it's an excellent point!
When did being rich become an excuse for commiting crimes? So now being a rich kid is a mental illness? Weren't Harris and Kelbold's family well to do, and James Holmes family has money too.?
Then does that mean if Harris and Klebold had survived been given some probation because of affluenza? And James Holmes should be able to go to a community outreach project for well to do murders?
This is simply one more case of insanity interjecting itself in the court house.
<palm forehead.
I don't think the problem is being rich. I think the problem is that rich people don't go to jail for their crimes. If you think that our justice system is fair and blind to economic class... then I don't think you are paying enough attention. Crooks who steal billions don't go to jail while the homeless guy who steals 20 dollars will. I don't think the found fathers would be proud of the current state of our justice system. Most certainly they would be appalled at a justice system that includes for profit jails that lobby our gov for harsher laws and punishments. Heck there is an instance where one of those for profit jails SUED because there were not enough people in jail. WTF
Affluenza has nothing to do with which inanimate object to blame instead of an individual's actions.
Affluenza is the premise that excessive consumerism can cause mental disorders. One being an ambivalence to those around him, because of his perceived privilege. There is little scholarly science behind the theory. The fact that an attorney used it to help his client and it worked is laughable at best.
OK I need to look into the term more.

You are right!

Exactly. the affluenza defense is a big pathetic joke, which is why it's popping up everywhere now. The kid's jury is to blame for all this.

Actually, the jury convicted him but the judge handed down the 10 year probation sentence. This time the outrage falls on her shoulders alone.

I am waiting for some hoodrat to pull a "I did it because of Pooritis".
"Affluenza", what a crock of bullshit.

I'm quite sure Pooritis has been tried, it just doesn't work. :)
This whole fiasco reminds me of the twinkie defense.

I really don't get insanity pleas and others similar to this. I mean, if you're insane, doesn't that make you MORE of a threat? Shouldn't your sentence be doubled in that case, as you're more likely to commit the same action again?
