Regular cigarettes were banned because if the second hand smoke risk. Other than e cigarette smokers usually look like douches, what is the motivation? They have almost no smell, and no real second hand risk. Is it just another jab at controlling the masses?

Who else is going to protect the people from themselves? i.e. nicotine addiction, obesity, etc.

You fear what you don't know I suppose. I smoked for almost 10 years and did my best to avoid other people when I was smoking so I've carried that over to my ecig use but I can stand next to you and use my ecig and you'd never know.

I find some perfumes far more objectionable. They are way friendly to non-smokers. What's to complain about. Land of the free.

and no real second hand risk.

Kind of hard to say that for sure. They don't even know what the first hand risks are yet from inhaling those chemicals. Could find out those things are worse for you than cigarettes and everyone will start smoking again to get off the electronic ones.

But yet NY taxis and busses pump out more carcinogens than any smoker ever can...

Many years ago I got into an argument with a peta type ... she was insistent that fur was murder and needed to be banned. I asked her about fake fur, she said it too needed to be banned because it made people think real fur might be ok.

I believe this is actually the logic of e-cig bans.

Inside every liberal is a totalitarian trying to get out.

I can speak on this subject with first hand knowledge. My kid is into "Vaping" which is similar to the e cig but on steroids. These things use electrically heated coils to vaporize flavored juices.
The kid is really into it and he builds all the internals himself such as the heating coils and switchgear. He has actually learned a tremendous amount doing it such as Ohms Law, calculating resistance and watts/volt relationship on a coil with x amount of winds, circuit troubleshooting etc.
He also mixes his own juices with different flavors and nicotine levels, frequently he won't even add the nicotine, he just likes the flavors.
The base of the juice solutions is polythene glycol and then flavors are added in various ratios and blends.
Unknown health risks aside, he really enjoys it as a hobby.

With that being said, I can't hardly stand the damn things. The clouds of vapor the things put out can be tremendous and can stink like the assholes of hell.
They can be sickenly sweet and if he gets the coil too hot the crap gets a burnt smell and will turn your gut.
As far as the ban goes, screw bans.

When we didn't fight seat belt laws because "it's not a bad thing" we gave up on freedom. It set the precedent that people need the government to protect them from themselves. This country is failing because we let it fail. We had a good run.

They don't listen.

Like it or not, we got lumped into the "we" a long time ago.

While I think NY does want to control every aspect of people's lives, the real reason for wanting to ban these could be as simple as tax revenue. The tax on a pack of smokes in NYC is almost $6 (most of which goes to the state), so they may see the e-cig as a threat to their revenue.

I think you're pretty close actually. I think I recall hearing on the radio that regular cigs are banned inside buildings, and they didn't want people using ecigs so cops wouldn't have to go up and check if they're tobacco or electronic, or whatever.

I don't smoke and can't stand the things, but bans like that are nuts imo.

I have a few friends that use e cigs, I have to agree that they make you look douchey, but being next to someone who uses it is no big deal. Once again, New York is trying to ruin things for everyone.

You've got to be. I exhale menthol and fruity goodness. It tastes and smells nothing like cigarette smoke.

Yeah, got to be only you. I used to sit next to a guy at a call center that used an E-cig at his desk and I wouldn't have known if I wasn't looking at him. I'm talking he was 36" away from me.

Now, he would go outside and smoke on his breaks, and come back in smelling like cigarettes, so maybe that is the case for you MattR.

I have co-workers that smoke those things and its not all of them, the fruity ones don't but the basic ones do.
