There was a thread on here a year or two ago that reminded me of this site... http://www.houzz.com/secret-compartment
I think a member was doing this type of work on the side. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I searched and searched but couldn't find the original thread. Any help would be appreciated.
TimK... does incredibly excellent work. Waiting on another piece from him right now.
Good person as well.

I did a couple hidden pistol safes behind large pictures. On-Q type metal wall box, 2 roller bearing drawer slides on the picture, and a lock. I would like to do a bigger one like pictured but no where to really do it.
I want to do this:

The house my high school girlfriend grew up in had something like this. It didn't hide anything good though.
We've done many of these over the years. As you might guess, most people don't want photos taken and published. I'd be happy to have a look. I'll warn, they can be expensive. There is a ton of design and engineering time involved. The way we do them works extremely well, though. The are as invisible as anything I've ever seen.

I'm still getting ideas and trying to determine how much space I really want to disappear.

A friend of the family does small contracting type jobs, and he has apparently done several hidden room types of things around the metro area. There are more out there than you probably think.

Definitely! We have shown many properties with hidden room, safe room, or secret closet. They don't usually disclose it on the listing description, but during inspection or before closing, sometimes we get a nice surprise.
Remember, there is plenty of space between the studs in a wall. I have heard (but not tried it myself) of making removable panels in the walls or wainscoting. The key is if you tuck something away, the more you go to that spot, the more chance for leaving a tell-tale mark where something is stashed.
I have known people to tuck a pistol and ammo in air vents (all legal people too, not shady drug dealers and the like).

I had a girl friend in high school who's parents had this too. theirs hid a wine cellar though. Great place to hide and... well you know.

It is because of this that I like the idea of the gun-hiding picture, but do not want the hidden room when I have children![Coffee]

Going into houses everyday for the past 20 + years, looking for a leak and hearing there's nothing behind there or you will have to come back my hudand needs to be here to let you in that room. The best one is don't judge us when I let you in here.
So true More then you probably think.

I put a secret compartment of some sort in most projects. I started out on this one just wanting a cavity to put some stuff in, but it got a little out of hand as you can see.

I'm thinking about picking up a Kreg Jig Set (I am assuming you used that for the pocket holes?), do you like yours?

It's awesome. With my track saw and Kreig I can build just about anything out of plywood in no time.

Awesome, Did you get the master set? I am going to build a set of rolling workbenches with drop leaves for various things like my table saw and a router and etc etc.

I did get the master set because it was all they had available, but I wouldn't recommend it. I don't use any of it except that which comes with the basic set.
I would definitely recommend getting a KHC-RAC clamp (http://www.rockler.com/kreg-right-angle-clamp?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_content=pla&utm_campaign=PL&gclid=COazhLH0krwCFSFo7AodswgAew). It's invaluable. It holds all right angles exactly where you want them, and clamps on fast. With some other clamps I used stuff would move on me.
Thanks! Saved me like 40 bucks! I just watched a vid on the right angle clamp, looks like it works like a charm!

Generally I'll put two pocket holes right next to each other, one to clamp in, and one to screw in. Once you've got the first screw in, take the clamp out and put a screw in the second hole. You use a lot of screws, but the stuff is really strong.
You'll get the hang of it quickly. But if you can't put a clamp right next to the pocket hole, stuff likes to move 1/16" when the screw tightens. Usually you can back it out and push against the piece to get it back to where you want it, and continue holding it while you drive the screw back in.

I have a couple of different Kreg sets. I am currently using the older version of the Kreg Master because of the clamping speed. If you wanted to make a trip up north, I'd be glad to lend you a jig, a bit, and the clamp you are looking at to try out before you buy them. You could also see an assortment of projects in various states of completion that feature the Kreg.
My big advise is to use a corded drill to cut the pockets, and a battery drill with an adjustable clutch to drive the screws. Particularly in ply, you don't want to overdrive the screw. You will either crush the ply or spin out the hole and lose bite.

I had not thought about the two different drills. I have the 18v dewalt system, I'll definitely be sure to adjust that clutch so it does not split the plywood as I will probably be using a lot of that.

you dont have to go very far or spend much to make hiding spots unless your looking to hide big stuff like weapons, ammo or supplies. heres one of mine already in use.

I've thought about putting a couple of these in but if I do, they'll have sockets in them. The cover just screams "look in here".

If you put the cable outlet cover on them you will have more room in the box.

I was thinking the same thing. I think as long as you are using the correct length and the head of the screw has similar dimensions I couldn't seem to discover any drawback to using a non kreg jig screws. The other thing about the screws that come with the jig is that they have a notch cut out of them so they are kinda like self-tapping screws. According to the DVD and website that is there to prevent any splitting of the wood.

...and a match, and I have heard a razor blade to cut the flag into smaller peices to burn.

If you have tools and are good with wood[ROFL2]you can do this your self. Shouldn't be hard to implement a keypad or fingerprint scanner.

I'm sure you could use other screws, but I haven't spent the time trying to find another source. There's nothing very special about them, except the square drive is nice.

I used to have a YT vid of a guy making a bookshelf door to a secret room. The shelf was on tracks and electro magnets held it shut.
I was the guy! That room was bad ass. The magnets held about 150lbs each so you could push on the bookshelf as hard as you wanted and it wouldn't budge. Flip the switch, and it popped right open. It was completely invisible.
when I built the room, I wasn't sure how I was going to lock it, so I had built another secret locking door into the room behind a vent in an adjoining closet. I could just barely squeeze through it. I assumed it would lock in a mechanical manner, so if it broke when locked I'd never be able to get into the room. With the magnets, I didn't end up needing it.
i debated when I was selling that house whether or not I should leave the room open during showings. I left it unlocked, but closed, with a little note that said "push me". It was always open when I came back home. I bet people really got a kick out of it.
I though it was someone from this site. That was an interesting set-up. Is the video still online?

no, it's no longer on YouTube. And I don't think I even have any pictures.
It was hung from the ceiling with unistrut, and unistrut trolleys, which made it go backwards in a straight line, and always return to the same position when closed. It also had casters underneath. I didn't want any track on the floor to trip over, and unistrut was the only thing that could support the weight from the ceiling.
My wife was bitching at me while I was building it because it was taking so long, but when I was done she apologized after seeing how awesome it was.

Adding visible metal accents to a piece of furniture should help.
Like here where a simple metal band was added.
