Do not under any circumstances install the bolt with the extractor facing AWAY from the ejection port. A customer did this with his DPMS .308 and it took a mallet, a screwdriver, and 2 grown men 10 min to fix. If your intent on a .308 Carbine for hunting, exspensive plinking, or just a cool new toy the DPMS is a decent deal. If not lubed correctly they jam up fairly easy. They arent generally MOA or sub MOA. Theres a reason the Military doesnt issue DPMS .308's. But for the money they are hard to beat. Which model are you looking at?

They are ok rifles, but I think the Smith M&P-10 is a much better rifle for about the same price.

Thanks for the intel. Looking at the DPMS Panther AP4 308 Win Rifle 16" Barrel RFLR-AP. New Mexico wildlife turned some in. I liked the price. I have had the magpul smith ordered for several months. DPMS 900.00 an the smith (new) 1350.00 out the door. Investment and hunting are my reason for purchase.

Other options to consider would be Bushmaster MOE mid length.

I had a sweet AR-10 rig but couldnt fund BOTH my .308/7.62 NATO AND my .223/5.56 NATO addictions at the same time.

I've owned three DPMS LR-308s and they are a good entry system. Each of them had 18" barrels and were sub-MOA shooters. Two of them had aftermarket custom barrels but my current one is a stock SASS configuration.

With the AP4, you can expect battle rifle accuracy 1.5-2" accuracy at 100 yards, but it is a good platform to build from. Selection of aftermarket barrels seem to be better for the LR-308 platform vs the AR-10.

I purchased a DPMS Oracle 7.62 about 6 months ago and could not be happier. Do want to get a nickle-boron BCG if I can find one. Friend of mine got the S&W M&P 10 at the same time for $300+ more. He's always wanting to trade off at the range.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have one with a sixteen inch barrel, and I'm thinking about swapping to an 18 or 20". Would I have to get a longer gas tube if I do this? What makes and where would I go to get one at a reasonable price?

I have a 24" stainless fluted heavy bbl. slick side.

Shoots sub MOA (.7-.8). Needs a better trigger and is quite heavy, even with that consideration it's my favorite rifle to shoot.

1 FTE so far, in about 500 rounds fired.

Good possibility you will need to purchase a longer gas tube. The 16" barrels use a carbine gas tube, but an 18" barrel is mid-length. Most replacement 308 barrels are 16, 18 or 24" but expect there are some custom/higher end 20" barrel lengths, which are probably rifle length gas setups.

What kind of budget do you have for the new barrel and what do you plan on doing with it? Additional 2" of barrel length doesn't give you much inside of 600 yards and I've seen guys ring steel at 1000 yards with a DPMS 308 Oracle with its 16in barrel. That said, I prefer a 18" barrel in my 308 AR.

You can get a DPMS SASS or SST 18" barrel for less than $300 new, plus Fulton Armory/Criterion has some around that price point, but slightly higher than DPMS. Krieger, JP Enterprises and other custom barrel manufacturers also offer them but price nearly doubles for them.

if you are looking for one of the top three custom barrel makers, Mark Chanlynn (Rocky Mountain Rifle Works) is local and exceptional.

Thanks for the information guys. I am hoping to build it into a decent tack driver. Although I may just leave it as is too, and pick up a rem 700 and build it up. I would eventually like to start shooting in long range comps.
