here is something i havent seen talked about before...

anyone who has built an ar knows how to install the mag release, here is the thing though...how far do you let it stick out to feel comfortable for you?

far in (would need to trim down the pin for comfortable use, however it still releases the mag just fine, releases at point where its nearly flush with the receiver )

"normal" flush screw with button

way out (as far out as possible before the button will sit higher than the receiver and can free turn causing problems)

The first picture is over tightened.. your catch will not clear certain magazine.
On the 3rd picture, the catch most likely barely hold on to your mag. Shoot few mags through, and you'll find out soon enough.
2nd pict is the correct installation.

Its not about how 'comfortable.' It's about how good it catches your mag.. not too tight.. not too light.

ive had mine set to the correct position since ive had it...just for some reason i started thinking about if other people set theirs perhaps a turn or two further in or out...the pics are just extremes for examples sake.

Keep it mil spec.. Those shield around the mag release is designed so you don't accidentally release your mag when you lay your rifle down on that side, or any shooting position against a wall etc. Well the shield is useless if your release is protruding too far.

Large Primate is wise.
1 turn below the surface of the button. I like to just barely feel the end of the mag catch stud.

This or one more turn loose if needed to freely drop the mag. Retention shouldn't be a problem for either.
