gold / placer mining in the state ?

looking to do some placer / gold panning here this summer.. this would be a recreational thing (time waster/distraction for my daughter and her friend) for a day or two ;) not a for profit operation.

looking for a decent place that wouldn't be a problem for the above and with public access. (and not invite the man into my life) ;)


I wasn't too successful with a google search, most of the results I got were history related.

something not too far from the metro denver area would be nice.

What about up Fall river road? Easy access. Close to 70. Don't have a clue if it'll be good though.

Victor, about 7 miles outside of Cripple Creek. They still lead tours through there plus you have hotels to stay at!

At the South side of Fairplay they allow (or at least USED to..haven't been there for years) panning in the stream that runs through town. Just North of Fairplay is where the largest gold nugget (more like a fist sized boulder) in CO was found.

Also, most folks agree that Fairplay IS "South Park". Plus there is a quaint little restaurant there that John Wayne and Glenn Campbell ate at during the filming of True Grit.

Clear Creek. About two miles before the turn to Blackhawk. Also, check out Bill at Goldndetectors. He has a lot of stuff and has been in business for about 20 years or so. He also carries dredges and highbankers, as well as sluices and pans.
We have also done real well across from the park at the end of golden and down at the meat house in the middle of Denver at 68 and Washington.

crossins go up or down stream its national forest. It is a bit of a hike but hell if two young laidies can make it I am sure your old decrepid ass can make it.

If your into camping and 4x4'N Mosquito pass, we go there quite often and have found decent quantity in the past. Just make sure you are on Nat Forest and not on the private land, sometimes it's not marked well.
