View Full Version : The Two Most Interesting New Handguns at SHOT Show This YearRemingto
And nope, it's not a single stack, pocket-size 9mm Glock to compete with the Shield, XDs, etc. like the buying public has been clamoring for for years. Believe it or not the two most innovative handguns are coming from Remington & Arsenal.
First up is the Remington R51 which is going to be a 9mm version of an old (early 1900's) but innovative even by today's standards action in a compact and well thought out package. Retail price will be below $400 and they claim it will be in dealers February 1st. You can bet your ass I'll have one of these sooner than later.

Up next is the Arsenal Strike One. This is a standard size frame handgun with lots of innovative designs and a few new patents. One design feature is the height of the slide over the frame is SUPER short. This coupled with an aggressive grip & standard size frame will make for a rapid shooter's wet dream due to the recoil mitigation it presents. It's been in production in various calibers for years now but never imported to the US. Arsenal claims we will see it in 9mm in this country this year. Price on this one is still not settled (sounds like sub $800) but assuming it's not too high I will own one of these also.

Neither of them is what I would consider very attractive or even aesthetically appealing until you dig into their design features. The beauty, much like my beloved Glock, is in the function.
Which brings me to my final point: As a self proclaimed Glock fanboi I'm saddened to report that with each passing year of Glock's inability to check the pulse of the consumer I'm an owner of more and more handguns by other manufacturers and becoming less and less of a Glock fanboi. Glock may have the lion's share of the market but their inability to adapt to the markets quickly (or at least at all) will be their eventual demise. Not a demise so much as eradicated from the face of the earth but they won't be the volume seller of handguns unless something changes at the corporate level. Market share is going to competition year after year of them not bothering to offer what it is the buying masses are flocking to in record numbers. It should be no surprise that the conceal carry crowd is growing at quickening rates and if Glock still thinks they're G17 (or even G19 these days) is the perfect carry weapon then they're more out of touch with reality than I thought. Their release of a single-stack .380 (Glock 42) to compete with the likes of the LCP and other 'pocket' 380's tells me they agree with this at least in part. Time to wake up Glock, your competitors are beating you at your own innovation game.
Thanks for the write up. I dig the whitefish colored one! I am a little concerned for my skin while holding the arsenal. Looks like it comes awfully close. What if you are wearing a glove?

Glock 42 not available in US right?

Yeah, that'st he finish I want too. It's different so might as well make it different all the way around. They claim the way it's shaped the likelihood of getting bit is slim but it sure does look like it's close. I can't wait to get my hands on one to test out for myself.

I will be looking into the Remington for one of my daughters.
The Arsenal I saw on an episode of TAC TV (I think that was it) where Larry Vickers went to Russia to the Arsenal facility. Pretty impressive and the pistol look like it deserves my attention, although I would prefer .45ACP.
Never have been a Glock fan since they just don't feel right in my hand.

Wrong. Available this year. G25/28?? .380's are not avail to US consumer market.

I rather like the R51 myself. The shape is somewhat reminiscent of this:

Now if I could only pull off wearing and tossing a fedora and afford to drive an Aston-Martin ...

Am also very interested in the R51. Curious about the updated Pedersen action.
I tend to think the Arsenal stuff is overpriced for what you get so will wait and see about it.

Read about the r51 on remy's website. Looks interesting, reminiscing about a HSc Mauser i had years ago. For the price point this unit may become a new addition.

I like the Remington for the simple fact that there is no freakin rail anywhere on it! Nice and smooth...

I'm not a huge fan of the Remington but the Strike One definitely has my curiousity.

This !
I'm more than a bit interdasted in the Remington, sure hope it is reliable with readily available mags and holsters. First it has a different mechanical approach to the action, which I'm always a sucker for. Then there are smoothed surfaces to avoid catching on cover garments. And as for appearance, it has a bit of art deco look that could have been styled by Raymond Loewy.

Digging the Remington!
The R51 is hideous. Looks like someone from Taurus took a job at Remington.
The Arsenal doesn't appear all that much different than a Glock as far as having the bore sit low in the hand.
If anyone picks up the Remington, I'll let you borrow my ramset if you ever want to upgrade from the factory grips.

I'd be curious to see what the trigger feels like on the Remington.
Found this Video for the StrikeOne, definitely caught my attention after watching...

I'll try to get my hands on all of these at SHOT next week. Wish I could shoot them, not just handle them. But I'll at least try to give you my impressions.

I love the Remington... must have....
The strike 1 looks like all the polymer pistols got together and decided to have an ugly baby.
I like the Remmy too, not likely to get one soon though unless I find a job. That other one - I'll pass. Looks like a hammer to me. I'm no fan of that style.

Of course the strike one is Russian, it's hideous but practical. I also wonder if the 18 round mag is a big f*** you to the glock 17 and it's 17 round standard mag.
Coolest handgun in saw was the Smith and Wesson 7 and 8 shot revolvers in 9x19. I ordered two of the 8 shots.

i have been looking at them also, my name is at the top of the lost at my local shop, they should have some a week or so.
as far as it being nice and smooth, my dad always said you want the smallest smoothest gun barrel possible so when the bad guy takes your gun away and shoves it up your ass it doesn't hurt so much.

I was also interested in the R51, but after reading the accounts from early adopters, I was holding out. Reliability issues, trigger issues, etc. It's a shame they couldn't make it work out, but I'm glad I waited.

Will the recent import ban affect getting the Arsenal pistol?
Not to mention the embargo sanctions on Russia won't help much in acquiring a Strike One.

I doubt the the sanctions in Russia will do much to hinder the supply of this pistol made in Italy.
Arsenal Firearms (not to be confused with Arsenal Inc, makers of the AK-style firearms imported into the US)
Isn't this what you really need?

Why are the bullets hitting on an angle I wonder.
I can't tell that there is an angle. It may appear that way due to the lighting and the bullet shadows as they approach the target.
Arsenal Inc (the AK maker) is based out of Bulgaria and is not affected by the recent sanctions. Arsenal Firearms the maker of the Strike One is out of Italy.. also is not affected by the recent sanctions.
The Strike One has been around since 2012.. beginning to wonder if we will even see it here, they are a small company and wonder if they even have the capacity to supply the market.
Pause it at 1:36. Definitely an angle.

Pause it at 1:36. Definitely an angle.
It looks like the bullets are the left ones, and the shadows are the right ones. At least that would make sense with how the target is angled with respect to the camera.
Let me rephrase, I'm talking about the angle of the holes on the target, relative to a line parallel with the ground. Assuming that the target is not angled, and the gun is not held at an angle, why is one impact higher than the other? If you watch the whole video, not every impact pair is at such an extreme angle, which is to be expected. For just the first impact though, I wonder if the gun was tilted or if the disturbance of each bullets flight path interacts with the each other.
BuffCyclist
07-20-2014, 17:59
Ah, gotcha.
If I had to take a stab, I would guess that the timing is off between the two barrels and one barrel fires a few milliseconds before the other. The recoil impulse drives the muzzle up when the second one goes off a millisecond later. Turbulence between the bullet flight path could be a cause, but I don't know if that has merit. If so, you would expect them to vary in all directions, not just vertically.
BuffCyclist
07-20-2014, 18:01
AHH!
Fast forward to 2:08 and pause it, then hit play and get ready to pause again right about 2:12. You can see both bullets mid air and the one on top is farther forward away from the muzzle, indicating that it was fired first (alternatively the powder charge of that round could be higher, so it has a higher velocity).
I saw that as well. Could be the barrel lifting as well like you first alluded to.
It's more of an oddity than a precision instrument. It's immensely impractical.
