Just thought I would share my girls hunting trip this year.First off I to have taken three deer to date with an AK the most memorable was a running head shot at about 60 yrds a yes memories. But this year was my girls first hunt ever now she had a choice between my old 30-06,a 243,or her trustee ROMY SAR1.Well she choose the SAR1,its set up modestly plum kvar stock set,utg side rail mount topped with a trs-25 red dot.She had practiced all summer and it paid off. Cut to late season hunt she had a doe tag to fill we were spot and stocking a herd and got within range I signaled for her to take her shot and boy she nailed her doe at about 120 yds using wolf 154 grn soft point with a neck shot that dropped the doe in its tracks I could not be more. proud of my girl at that moment. She can and will be watching my six.Does anyone else hunt with there AK or sks please share your experiences.

If this was in Colorado you might want to edit your story...... Specifically the gun description.

l just checked. the rules and regs and the AK is legal with five round mag for hunting all day there are no stipulations about red dot Scopes.I'm not hunting with a muzzle loader which is the only firearm restricted from electronic devices.

That's not true.... Now you're going to make me look....

Nothing illegal about using an AK if you follow the mag rules and ammo type rules.

Word Def man my girlfriends son is up next he wants to use his moms Sar1 as well.
Electronic sighting devices are only illegal on a bow, or on a muzzle loader during muzzle loader season (muzzle loaders can have them during rifle season). During Rifle season, you can have electronic sighting devices on your gun.
Electronic calls are illegal for any big game hunt.

Time to file a lawsuit.

stop swearing. you'll feel better about yourself.
Using artificial light to aid a hunt is also illegal in big game. But that is talking about spotlights and similar lighting devices to hunt near dawn/dusk.

Yeah. But still. Why the hell can't I have illuminated pins or nocks but a rifle guy can have a red dot or an illuminated reticle?
Discrimination! Lawsuit!

Yeah, agreed. I have to remove my lighting module from my bow for archery. Luckily fiber illuminated (natural light) is allowed.
Whats even more odd, is that the Regs specify that Muzzle loaders can't have scopes or electronic sighting devices during muzzle loader season, but CAN have them in rifle.
However, if you follow the regs verbatim, its illegal to have electronic sighting on a bow even during rifle, as there is no explicit exception like there is for muzzle loader. I think in rifle, you wouldn't have a warden write you up for illuminated pins, but per the letter of the law they still aren't allowed.
I assume that they didn't foresee many bows used in rifle season, so just didn't write in the exception for them.

While on the subject, are bow mounted rangefinders prohibited as well?

Anything electronic is a no no on a bow.

That just makes no sense to me you would think electronic aids would be ok in the stuff that's harder to use and not ok on rifles

Just like most of our other laws, totally backwards

The motivation for the restrictions is to preserve the semblance of the "primitive" nature of the archery season. And yes, I know how that contradicts the allowance for compounds etc.

So a handheld is ok, but put it on a bow and a no go. Just doesn't make much sense to me either.

Our friends in NE take most of their game with an SKS or old remy 788. Usually they have both on hand, or the enfields.

Tell me a hunting story.

Aiming for the rider and hit the transportation instead....[LOL]
I had used an AKS with a 5 round magazine hunting deer in Arizona. The area we hunted was called the blue primitive area. Near Hannigan Meadow which is near the Arizona, New Mexico border. Really rough terrain where you didn't have any long distance views. Had the Game and Fish Warden stop me and verify I had only had a 5 round magazine. He was pretty cool about it and loved the way the gun handled in the brush. Said it was a perfect deer rifle for the terrain. Let him shoo it and he really got a kick out of it and said he had to get one. About the hunt the only thing was we only saw were does the 5 days we were out there. Every other hunter we talked to only saw does too..so that was a bust of a hunt.
