I looked around and best I can find is there may be a "defined at later date" late elk season. Is there an elk season in right now? I figure it is cause they're wearing flame orange in the front yard, just not finding it on the DNR site.

Could be a damage control tag?

I shot a cow in a late season hunt one time. Been a few years ago but seems like it was in January.

Many units have the private land cow tag still going on until the 30th.

There are some early January Ranching for Wildlife hunts. Three friends just took cows last weekend.

I know of a few units in western colorado have seasons that run until the 15th or 30th. And I believe that there is a plains elk season that runs until the 30th as well

^^^^^ Yup, probably a private land only tag. I forgot to put in for mine this year damit. 5 month tag.

There is a late cow season running Jan. 1st-31st. There is also a plains season running as well.

Land owner preference tags?? hunted on them several times in Oregon great way to get some easy meat in the freezer. The Hunts were always in January it seemed like.

Sounds like a good opportunity to meet your neighbors.

Plains elk through the end of the month, Ranching for Wildlife and a few Private land tags still open. All pretty easy to fill...if you get permission to hunt private land. I don't think there are any tags open in January that are on public land. They shortened the late season tags to just December on public a few years ago.
