Another head case. Quite the original move.
It was bound to happen at some point. It won't be the last one either.

This is not "another theater shooting" since "theater shooting" (like "school shooting") has the explicit meaning of a spree shooting in said location ... this is how the left defeats us constantly, by toying with the language.
This tendency toward describing every shooting in a public place with the same language one describes mass/spree shootings is just another tool the antis use to push gun control.
This is a shooting that happens be at a theater, not a "theater shooting".
And based on the story I'm not convinced the victim didn't have it coming :p

Just like http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/13/us/pittsburgh-school-shooting/ was reported "another school shooting". Leftist media labeling events before the facts are in to get ratings and push their agenda.

Just think.... It there was no cell phones this would of never happened. It must be the cell phone.
That ought to silence the caliber wars.

Damn. I won't be texting in the movies anymore!
In all seriousness, this is so stupid. People trying to cause others serious harm for such small infractions. We really need to teach our children to respect life.

I suspect it was fed by attitude from both sides of the situation. Respect is to be exercised by both sides of a dispute. If the texter hadn't been texting, or immediately apologized and shut off the phone, it wouldn't have happened either. I am tired of the arrogant, entitled attitudes of people in public these days. Still doesn't excuse the shooter though.
Theater shooting......? Somebody shot a theater?

Was the theater the target, or the ammo?

An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.

Wow, the natives are restless. "Had it coming"...really, taking someone's life because they are rude, really...if anyone really thinks that, please, get some professional help and by all means, stay away from guns until you can get it under control. There is NEVER an "okay" time to take a life except in war or to protect innocent life from grave harm and or death. Sure the "texter" may not have been "innocent", but he did not deserve death.
An armed society is a polite society only if people respect others. Rudeness is encouraged throughout the American culture, in fact brash in your face rudeness is no longer uncommon. We may be past that point in the USA where respect of our fellow man, much less his life, is still the common denominator.
Aren't theaters "cell phone free" zones?

The guy killed by his sister was shot with a .22. IIRC, mob hitmen favored .22s because they were going to get close to their targets anyway and the bullet gets really mangled.
Too bad it happened during the film Lone Survivor.

It was just the previews, I bet the video asking for everyone to shut off their phones wasn't even played yet.

I agree that it was fueled by both sides, I'm just saying in the CCW class I took, I heard that while carrying a firearm, it is also your responsibility to not let things escalate to that point. There are many times that while driving I want to give people the finger for driving like idiots, however I remember that I DO have a firearm in the car and DON'T want to increase the likelihood of me having to use it on anyone.
The Theater should be held liable if the suspect left the confrontation to seek an authority figure to resolve the issue.

In light of the past-occupation of the shooter (retired cop), it seems surprising that shooting was the option chosen.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Quite a sad story. If people only would use their brains.

Well if we want to teach them to respect life.. we certainly shouldn't have them reading this forum.
Piss poor choice of words for a title.. piss poor use of judgement in the movie.. I bet people stop texting for a bit at the movies now..

We're beyond the point of no return.
Last night, a 15yo tried to rob a man in the Springs & shot him in the leg. No word if they caught the punk or if the punk got anything for his effort.
Then you've got situations like the video of the 2yo cursing & flipping the bird to a man behind the camera (Baby Daddy?) who was egging the kid on to escalate his inappropriate behavior. Now the child & his 17yo mother (do the math, she was 14 when she got pregnant) are in protective custody at a foster family. ETA: Link to video: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AAIqMPBg-2g
The examples are endless which clearly shows that respect for others, to the point of putting zero value on human life, is a thing of the past.
Just remember to bob & weave - and if running away from flying lead, use the serpentine method.
I agree with Ginsue, society has degraded to the point of being unable to repair itself. But you know what, I will never get shot at a movie because I do not go to them. There are enough ignorant loud mouthed douche-bags at every movie to ruin the experience for me. The same goes for most bars, public sporting events, festivals and large groups of people doing just about anything.

In light of the past-occupation of the shooter (retired cop), it seems surprising that shooting was the option chosen.
My guess is that it went like this.
Old man chastises young man over texting (probably rudely and with an air of authority).
Young man tells old man to f-off.
Old man challenges young man.
Young man stands up.
Old man now thinks he's in serious physical danger.
Old man shoots young man.
Not justifying or condemning either man's actions here but my guess is that the old man escalated situation to the point where he felt afraid and then reacted.
Methinks this defense won't save him in court (and probably shouldn't).
The only way I see the retired cop walking is if witness testimony verifies the following scenario:
Old man politely requests that young man desist in using his cell phone in the theater.
Young man explodes, jumps up and starts to advance menacingly on the old man saying something like "F-YOU OLD MAN ... I'LL KILL YOU FOR YOUR INSOLENCE!"
Old man draws weapon and fires while screaming like a little girl.
If you read the latest, it's reported the "old man" left his seat (presumably to tell management) then was confronted by the now dead texter upon return. Certainly it must have escalated from there.
Any further supposition until more is known is futile and unproductive at best.
