Optics considerations for a Rimfire Trainer

I'm in the process of building a rimfire trainer for my 260 Rem long range rifle. My LR rig is a Savage Model 12 sitting in a Manner's T-5 stock with a SWFA 5-20X scope. The rimfire trainer is looking like it will be a CZ 455 Precision Trainer in a Manner's T-4 stock. I'm checking with Manner's on whether the ergonomics between the T-5 and T-4 are similar, despite the T-5 being a thumbhole stock. Eyeballing them, it appears the comb height and grip angle are very similar. Both rifles will be principally shot prone or off of a bench. Trainer will be limited to 50 to 100 yards.

The CZ 455 has the integral 11mm dovetail on the action, so not sure if installing a rail is possible or even necessary. My objective is to keep the eye relief/cheek weld and fit/feel consistent with its centerfire counterpart.

Mounting another SWFA 5-20X is a pricey option, so looking for recommendations on what optic to choose. Thinking that so long as the reticle is the same, the training value will still be there. I have a SWFA 3-15x scope with the same mil-quad reticle that is a contender.

Depending on your budget, I would go with a 10 or 12 power SWFA fixed power. I believe the new ones are around $300. I have an older one on a Savage MKII and it is all I need. Come on down and shoot the PD match this weekend and you will see the gambit on 22's.

I like the SS's, too. I have 16X's on both trainers (how in the world did I end up with 2?) and a 20 on a precision AR.

You might also consider rethinking your max range. The first time you hit a .22 silhouette at 200 yards you'll be hooked. To that end, you may want to consider a rail with some cant built into it.

Dino/Tim: Thanks. Appreciate the invite. That the one down in Pueblo? 22LR at 200 yards. Sounds like indirect fire using a 45-70.

Didn't think about a fixed power scope but makes a lot of sense given the likely ranges. A SS 16x might just be the answer.

Particularly like the link to the scope mount. I've heard of DIP and expect I'll be spending some time and money on their site.

You guys running rails and rings with your optics? Seems like CZ or Warne 30mm rimfire rings should do just fine even with the dovetail mount. My other rimfires just use rings but I'm not running a heavier scope on it either.

I have a DIP rail and Leupold rings (only because that,s all I had). Any 30mm ring will work.

Like Tim K I put my Remington 40X in an AI chassis so it feels like my center fire rifle *and* chicks dig it.

You might want a 25moa rail. There's a lot of fun to be had beyond 50-100y.
