View Full Version : Local Accidental Discharge
This happened yesterday in Thornton. The lady in the next cube got a message from her roommate, He had just had a visit from the local SWAT team.
Seems a neighbor called in burglar report on the roommate (who has lived there for years). SWAT had the house surrounded when the roommate opened the door (wearing a 3 piece suit) and was greeted by several weapons pointed in his general direction. After inviting them in and explaining his presence in his home, a team member attempted to safe the shotgun they were carrying and the resulting accidental discharge of a beanbag round wounded the hardwood floor of the house.
Less then two hours after the incident went down, the home owner (my coworker) had been given assurances that the city would cover any damages and that the team member, a trainee, would be counseled.

Sounds like the excitement caused the trainee another type of accidental discharge that caused the obvious one with the beanbag round.
(Someone had to say it - I KNOW that I'm not the first one who thought it!)
it wasn't an AD, it was a ND ;)

I think the boss had the right guy for the weapon loaded with beans. Maybe all rookies get that treatment.
BTW how much damage could a bean bag do? Wouldn't it just be something to sweep up off the hardwood?

A shot in the chest can/will break ribs - that's strong enough to cause a compression dent in the wood flooring.

I got shot with one of those filled with rock salt when I was a kid, for tresspassing on a railway yard. Believe me when I tell you, it will bring down anyone. Imagine being shot with one of those automatic baseball launchers. That's about what it feels like.
Times have sure changed. After I got shot with the beanbag, my mother beat my ass for tresspassing on private property and told me I got what I deserved. Nowadays, the parents would just sue.
Anyone else have a difficult time believing that SWAT showed up for a burglar? I sure do...

At close range, it definitely has potential to break a rib and leave a nasty bruise. Within 5 ft, it has potential to cause a pulmonary contusions (bruised lung) or if shot placement is spot on, could stop a heart. NOW... those conditions would have to be fairly precise for that to happen though, primarily timing / placement of the shot & phase cycle of the heart. [Doctor]

The biggest problem I with it is that he said he invited them in and explained his presence, I don't think SWAT would need an invite or wait for one, and Having been a cop before, don't believe he would still be standing at that point to be able to extend an invite. But it makes a good story[ROFL1][ROFL1][ROFL1]
Yeah I fall for this shit. You can't even ge a cop to show up and make a report for a burglary. Unless it's a hostage sit. or a domestic or In Progress where they can all go blazing and wear their little suits it don't happen.
Course where we live we usually just shoot the perp, put on coffee find a good hunting show on the tube then call. 15 to 20 min later we have every single person on the force in your yard... So who's watching then hen house???

This was posted on another board and I only watched it once. People were saying that it was fake and the shot (if there was one) came from another person because the guy on camera didn't exhibit any recoil at all.

agreed - maybe 2 or 3 officers, if it was "in progress" but SWAT?
