I didn't see anyone post this, and I don't say this often, but kudos to DPD for ending a potentially volatile situation swiftly and judiciously. This is a pretty good shot, put the suspect down (not killed) and got the hostage to safety.

I seen this earlier today. I was somewhat surprised he went down so quick, as it is reported its a shot to the shoulder.

Watched it on the news last night. They said they shot him in the shoulder, from the way he dropped I thought they may have hit in the base of the skull/spine.

Where did the shot come from and where was the guy hit?

Great job by the officers involved.

Any indication what kind of rifle / cartridge?

Rifle? That'd explain the quicker response.

J

You can tell from the report of the shot that it was a rifle. I'm wondering if it was someone close with an AR, or someone further with a sniper platform / bolt gun.

Terrible shot, the scumbag is still alive.

Pretty sure it was a Bushmaster AR .223, that's what Denver uses. You can see the SWAT officers rush the scene after the suspect goes down and they're all packing ARs. The suspect is still listed as critical, last I heard.

The way he fell back, I thought he got shot in midsection or upper leg. I think the guy that took the shot was about 15 ft in front of him (you can see a bit of the shooter's reflection in the windows).

Very strange to watch something like this raw.

That's Fox 31 for you! They're a bit more raw than most... media seems to be moving in this direction, though.

That was a different shooting. Commerce City, Adams County Sheriff & State Patrol I think were all involved

in situations where the perp is actively guilty (ie it's "real time" threatening the life of an innocent in a hostage situation), I wonder what ethical problem there'd be with having an automatic deadly-resolution policy. In this case: the hostage gets freed, swat runs up, but instead of decades of jail & trials & appeals for the taxpayer to pay for, the perp just gets shot to death.

ETA: of course, give the hostage taker one chance to come out peacefully, otherwise he gets the full lethal response.

I don't know why, but I am calling the shot off the right side of the camera and elevated.....hit him in the back and the right shoulder and pushed him to the glass and down. I'm going with a called rifle shot not an AR off a hunch.

(now my wife is arguing me and making me watch it over and over.....maybe gut shot from the front? Damn I hate being wrong, but you can see the smoke and shockwave and id the shooter through movement and interaction)

Teh shame :o:o:o:o

Yes, great happy ending!

Although, would have been happier if the bad guy got shot in the face.

He selected a hostage that was shorter than he was. When she lowered her hands they had the shot and took it. Evil and stupid.

It's somewhat disconcerting to think about the bullet progressing on it's merry way after transiting hoody-man. Maybe humans don't resemble ballistic gelatin as much as we've been led to believe.

Like Lex says, different officer involved shooting. The 270 shutdown was caused by a report of an accident, Commerce City PD officers respond, suspect opens fire, cops return fire, suspect down... so two officer involved shootings, both times the cops come out unscathed, the bad guys get an extra hole in their body. I'd say all in all, a pretty good day.

Yep. Shooter shot from a kneeling position. The exit may have been closer to shoulder height, but the entry probably wasn't.

My thought's exactly. Good job to DPD and their shot placement! Looks like everyone is holding ARs so probably .223 round. Regardless of caliber, being shot would ruin your day!

I like this video for a few reasons. One inparticular is the fact that is shows you that a quality .22 cal defense bullet properly placed can drop somebody like a bag of potatoes. That is another reason I don't entertain the "caliber" debate. It's all about shot placement.

...and it helps to use a rifle. Handguns are typically much more survivable.

Denver does not use Bushmaster. Colt and Smith and Wesson are the only two authorized.

Fair trial before a jury of your peers doesn't mean anything anymore? What if the "hostage taker" was under duress?

Neg, this was at Colfax and Perry. I drive past it on my way to work, missed the incident that day, but DPD was still all over the scene when I was headed in.

Not to sound like a bleeding heart but this loser had family & friends and I (somehow) hope they can find peace in their grief. Also, remember the marksman and responders. Talk about stress!!

With no LE/military training/background, I can only imagine the intensity, if thats a good word. This guy had plenty of time to change his mind and give up. He chose not to and lost. Lets hope the witnesses and all involved can put this behind them. Job well done by law enforcement on this one.
