View Full Version : Lost a best friend...
Our 2 1/2 old Aussie/Border Collie mix name Bullet was hit & killed by a car this past Monday morning. He was my 4 year-old's best friend. He was a friend, sweet to those who cared for him, protector and companion. Somehow he was properly motivated to jump the back fence in our yard and ran. We're pretty broke up about it. We do have an older dog who I know already misses his little buddy running around with him in the back yard. Worst damn conversation I've ever had as a father. I hope my son is a lot older when our other dog passes. It's was absolutely unbearable to see the tears running down my little man's face when I broke the news. Damnit anyway.
Here's a fairly recent picture. He was a great friend.

Sad news indeed. Seems to be an all-too-common thing lately. My buddy lost his 2 dogs recently (while he's deployed overseas). So sad, our condolences to you & your family. We love our borders!!

Squeeze...that totally sucks to go through, brother.
I hope your Son can eventually understand it, and be at peace with the situation. Tough deal for sure.
You just reddened the eyes of about 800 people out here! Too sad Squeeze, all the best to you and the family. I'm betting an Aussie/Border mix could learn to tie a shoe if you showed them enough times.
Great picture of the 2 kids!

damn, sorry about your lose, my dogs are part of the family too. We have lost dogs in the past and its always hard, its losing a part of us each time.
Thank you all so very much. I really appreciate it.
I had to tell my son that Jesus needed a dog so he sent his angels down and took Bullet home. Little guy must've cried for an hour. Yesterday he told my wife, "Mommy, can you chase Jesus down and bring my Bullet back please." Couldn't do anything to keep the tears from rolling down my cheeks. Most miserable feeling in the world. Wouldn't wish it upon anyone. [Cry]

Sorry to hear that happened. Condolences to you and your family. I don't envy you at all having to break that news to the little guy, I'm sure that was at least equally as hard on you as losing the pup.

I'm the same since my sons were born. Used to be nothing affected me, but since they've been around it's amazing how much dust is in the air when these things happen now.
God bless you & your family-
been down that road WAY TOO MANY times........

You explained it to your little guy well. That's something only a DADDY can do!
Sorry for your loss, been there and done that.
When my youngest was 5 the phone company was here running a new line. Asswad service guy leaves the back gate open and our Pomeranian got out. My youngest was trying to catch her when she ran into the street and got hit. He saw it happen and the aftermath which was not pleasant.
As awful as it was I was thankful he wasn't five feet closer to her, I would have lost my son as well. I don't know what was worse, the hurt over losing the dog or the realization just how close he had come.
Condolences.
Hug your kids then hug your dogs. If you can do both at the same time, do it!

Wow. All I can say is Prayers to you guys, brother; prayers.
Sad. Loosing a dog never gets easy. I'm betting he has a great life.
I'm terribly sorry to hear this, my condolences. Losing a dog to age or illness sucks bad enough, no dog deserves to go this way. I'd be devastated to lose one of ours.
Thank you again gentlemen. I really appreciate it.
Burt, I'm not sure how I would've handled the situation your son was in. That's just about as bad as it gets. Definitely glad your son didn't get hit by the car. I know everything happens for a reason, whether we know it or not. I just hope the good Lord never makes me go through this again.

We all get it, and lots of us are grieving with you. Thanks for posting a pic of your boys. What a pair! I'm so sorry for your loss. Your pup reminds me of JD, my Australian Cattle Dog who passed away not to long ago. I expect the JD is showing Bullet the ropes on the other side!

Condolances for sure. I am dreading having to have that convirsation with my son in the future. However, when it is such a young dog and child it is very tough.
I am reminded of this article :

I also feel that pets play an important part in a child's life. It teaches the value of life and the permanence of death.
Can we get a NSFW tag on posts like this. Stupid allergies.
Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. I've lost several dogs, but usually to old age. Always hurts.
I have an Aussie AND a Border Collie. Great dogs, especially around kids, and smart too...

I'm really sorry to hear about this. Hard enough to lose the dog as I know they are family, but I can only imagine how tough it was to have that discussion with your son as well. Take care...

I think it was Mickey Rooney who said every child should see puppies born and have to put an old friend down once in their life. I agree. IMO, it teaches them the cycle of life we all are held too.
From one dog owner / lover to another, I'm so very sorry for you and your family's loss. You are all in my prayers.
