View Full Version : How to dispose of a big heavy tube tv

We have a tv we need to get rid of, it does work well but we finally got a flat screen.
Dump won't take the tv, it's way to big and heavy to get it into a trash can. I've called around, Salvation Army, recyclers etc.
I'm not dumping it in a ditch. What are my options?
It works well, and has a working universal remote if anyone wants it.

Its to the point now where most places won't take tube TVs anymore.

I hate to say it but your best bet is to dismantle it, crush the tube and put the pieces in the trash.

There was an older guy on Craig's who picked up tv's cleaned or repaired them and then gave them to charities.

I tried giving one away for a couple weeks on CL. Good luck.

There are plenty of places that will recycle it.

Drop it off at ARC thrift store? Nevermind says they don't take them.

I think goodwill takes them. If you are looking to recycle them, Best Buy recycles electronics for free. I took several CRTs there just recently.

Most charities won't accept tube TVs anymore, even if they work.

If you can get someone to take it on Craigslist that would be ideal (except for the fact that you'll be inviting some creepy folk to your home ... I'd take it to the office and make them pick it up there if that's an option).

When I had a garage sale I tried to sell two, but no one wanted them. So I just put them along the cub and posted a sign on them that said "free works good" and they were gone that day. Just attach the remote to it with tape. I would try that first then look for other options.

Robb

ARC, Salvation, small appliance stores won't take them.

CO_Outback, no luck on Craigs huh? How much did you have to pay to leave it with one of the recycle places?

I was trying to give away a Sony 27" tube and had it on there for a couple weeks with no luck.

I have a guy here in springs who scraps so I just called him and he came and got it.

Call Best Buy. They took mine last fall. They even offered to unload it out of my van.

I tried giving away several of them with no luck. Goodwill won't even take them. I got rid of them at Best Buy in Aurora; they will take them up to a certain size (36" I think) and recycle them for you.

I'll give Best Buy a call. Thanks for the tip.

Plenty of electronics recyclers in Denver that will take it. Yes you will have to pay to dispose of it. It is now state law that it is illegal to just dump electronics of any sort in the garbage. Metech is where I take all the stuff I have to dump, I take old electronics from my clients but I charge them as well because it costs me to get rid of the stuff. Some cities around the area used to have a once a year free recycling day where you drop off stuff at a predetermined location in your city.

http://www.metechrecycling.com/

Best Buy will usually take stuff but they will charge you for it sometimes depending on what it is. they usually then give you a gift card back in the amount that they charged you for the drop off. they seem to change their policy on this fairly regularly so I would call ahead.

32 inches is the max for best buy, but they don't measure so if it doesn't look huge you can dump it there. Sounds like its pretty grande though.

I always try out on the curb first before doing the craiglist or trying to find a place.

I gave a 42" sony brick (trintron tube) on CL. People will still take them, there are places but you have to pay THEM to get it. Lol

Oh yeah, couple places wanted $100.00 to come and pick it up and dispose of it, Other recycle places wanted a min of $35.00 after I drop off. I'm such a cheap-ass I'd rather find some way too lose it for free.

Wrrap it in a few layers of heavy plastic and break out the sledge.

Everybody has them, nobody can use them anymore, everybody needs to get rid of them, yet it's damn near impossible without paying for it. And you have to pay some recycler to take them, when they're going to make money from them!

Pretty fucked up situation IMO.

heheheh, yeah but I'm trying to exclude the American speaking folks who have things better than those who are hunting for the American dream. We have to help them out first because they are underprivledged and need every little advantage they can get to make it in the world.

Wait. So you're not supposed to haul it up to Harris Park, riddle it with bullets and leave the shards around for others to clean up?

Boy I was way off on that one.

Lay down large tarp. Set tv on said tarp. Shoot the shit out of the tv. Pack up large pieces by hand. Bundle up the tarp and all the small pieces that are there. Dispose of all of it in your trash. Pretty easy and lots of fun. If you did it right , you will have mostly mall pieces that you can easily wrap up in the tarp.

I'll summarize.

Thrifts do not accept CRT's any longer.
Best buy takes them up to 32".
There's a guy in Parker (and certainly elsewhere) that will snatch them off CL, but he won't come get them unless you have a couple.
Free on the curb often works because:
There are lots of folks stripping out the copper on the yoke, and the boards for paid recycle, then taking them to Best Buy (under 32")
Who knows what happens to the larger ones? Probably busted up and dumped in your nearest dumpster.
Free on CL brings out the crazy lazy. People that will have every excuse in the book to have you hold something, then not show up when they said they would or call to let you know they are dirtbags.

there was a free recycling event on Havana a few months ago--I had two TVs to dump--no kidding I was in line for an hour to unload them. I was there about 2pm, and they had easily 6 or 7 semi-truck loads of monitors, TVs, computers, whatever that they had collected throughout the day

They have recycling events in Highlands Ranch. They ask for a cash donation for large TVs, but it is a tax deductible contribution to a scholarship fund. I've disposed of a boatload of old electronics and computer shhhhtuff.

Squeeze, if your bud wants it let me know. I did call Best Buy and they'll take it soooo I would like to get it out of the house as soon as possible. I was hoping to do it tomorrow but I can hang onto it for couple days if he wants it.
